I. While the British controlled India, there was one British official who was in charge. He was called the viceroy. (“Vice” like vice-president and “roy” which comes from “rex” which means “king” in Latin. He was like the “vice-king.”) Indians could not vote for the viceroy, but you will see him in the film today.
II. Muslims and Hindus lived throughout South Asia. Most Muslims lived in what is today Pakistan. Most Hindus lived in what is today India. However, there were many thousands of Muslims who lived in India and many thousands of Hindus who lived in Pakistan.
