7th Grade Year-end Activities!

Langley Marina: Tuesday & Wednesday, June 10 & 11, 2014

Deer Lake: Thursday, June 12, 2014

Dear 7th Grade Students & Parents/Guardians,

As we come into the home stretch of our 7th grade year, we look forward to our culminating experiences, which will be held during the last week of school!

Please review the information and schedule and return the checklist, permission forms, and payment by May 15th.

Tuesday & Wednesday, Langley Marina

In partnership with Whidbey Watershed Stewards, SEA (Service Education Adventure), Chris Burt, Orca Network, and Taylor Shellfish, we are organizing several experiences that our 7th graders will rotate through over the course of two days, June 10th & 11th (Tuesday and Wednesday). In addition, each of our presenters will be working with students in Science classes during May and June for “pre-expedition” learning and preparation.

Boat-based Adventure (half day-see schedule):

Students will board the boat from Langley Marina and participate in three rotations during their half-day adventure:

1) Pilot House: Chris Burt, Skipper

2) Plankton Sampling: Rick Barker, Whidbey Watershed Stewards

3) Shellfish Farming & Water Quality: Nicole Hopper, Taylor Shellfish

About the boat: This is a 50’ US Coast Guard inspected vessel for 25 passengers and 4 crew/educators. (Please note that no parent chaperones will be needed.)

It is skippered by Chris Burt, US Coast Guard Certified Captain and experienced educator who has led marine education programs for 20 years.

Beach-based Adventure (half day-see schedule):

1) Salish Sea Food Web, Beach/Marina: Lori O’Brien, Whidbey Watershed Stewards

2) Microplastics, Beach/Marina: Susie Richards, SEA (Service Education Adventure)

3) Whale Center, Langley: Special program designed for our group by Orca Network

Groupings & Schedule:

Students will be grouped by their 4th Quarter Enrichment classes, with some adjustments to balance numbers. Students will be participating in school-based activities on their “off times” that are related to their explorations.

Thursday, Deer Lake

We will be going to Deer Lake for water safety and fun, including kayaking and swimming at Lakeside Bible Camp. Many thanks to Mr. Jokinen for organizing this wonderful experience for our 7th graders! We will be at Deer Lake from 10 am to 2 pm, and are in need of several chaperones for this day. Please see below for details and indicate your availability to help on the check list. Transportation will be provided by district buses.

Chaperones: Be sure you have a current background check on file (you can check with the main office).

If you are able to chaperone for the beach-based session, please indicate on the checklist and return.

We will need several chaperones for Thursday, 6/12, our Deer Lake day! We especially need adults who can assist with water activities and supervise games and sports. If any of you are any certified lifeguards that would be able to be “on duty” in the swim area, please let us know as soon as possible! THANKS SO MUCH!

Cost and Scholarships: The cost per student is $20, checks made out to “South Whidbey School District”. Thanks to the generous support of South Whidbey Schools Foundation, we are able to offer full and half scholarships for families who require support. Please indicate your needs on the checklist and return ASAP, so that we can be sure ALL kids are covered. THANK YOU!

Sack Lunches: Students will need a sack lunch, including beverage, each day. A water bottle and extra snacks will also help. If you would like to order sack lunches from the school cafeteria, please indicate on the checklist.

What to bring & wear:

DRESS FOR THE WEATHER, bring layers, and wear appropriate footwear!

For Deer Lake, students will be getting wet, and will need swimwear, towel, and a plastic bag to take it all home.

Cougar Code of Conduct: Respect for Self, Others, Environment, and Safety

In order to participate in the boat, beach, and lake-based activities, students must adhere to our Cougar Code. We will be in public places and working with several guest presenters. We have been talking to the students about the importance of positively representing LMS. We truly hope ALL students will choose to demonstrate their Cougar Pride during 4th quarter so that they are able to fully participate in year-end activities. We will be contacting parents/guardians of any students who may be having difficulties and will participate in school-based activities only.

We look forward to our culminating adventures to celebrate a fantastic 7th grade year!

Sincerely,

Your 7th Grade Team

Mary Bakeman, Susan Milan, Jack Terhar, Sally Thompson
