Standard 1, Objective 1

Title: Atom Brochure

Description: This brochure can be used as an assessment or as a research project.

Materials: Pencil, paper, computers with Internet access (optional), colored pencils, glue, scissors, brochures from a local visitor’s center

Time: 3-5 45 minute periods

Procedures:

1. Show students examples of brochures and talk about their parts.

2. Explain to students that they will be designing a brochure about the atom. Their brochure should be creative and unique, but should meet the requirements described.

Briefly explain the requirements for the brochure and give students a timeline for working on each part. Give more details on each part as they work on it. You may want students to do a rough draft first so that their final will be higher quality work.

Introduction: We are making brochures to help advertise the wonders and amazing aspects about atoms! You are the designer that will help try to sell the atoms to future classes. There are 6 sides to your brochure and you are encouraged to add personal touches and use your creativity. Of course there are some requirements that need to be included. The requirements are listed below.

1. Cover Page (3pts)

Requirements: The cover page is the first thing your customers see. Thus it should be bright, attractive, and alluring. It should include

· A title

· At least one picture or design

· Your name

2. Timeline (3pts/scientist = 15 total)

Requirements: Our knowledge of the atom has changed throughout history. You need to include a timeline of how our knowledge of the atom has grown and changed throughout human history. It should include

· 5 scientists

o Start with Democritus or the Greeks

o Include Dalton

o Include Bohr or a more recent scientist

o The other two scientists are your choice

· 1-2 sentences about each scientist’s experiments, discoveries, or contributions to our present knowledge of the atom

· models can be incorporated into the timeline or make up a separate portion of the brochure

3. Models

Requirements: Our beliefs about what atoms look like and are made of have changed over time in response to the findings of experiments conducted by many scientists and technological advances. You will need to show some different models of atoms proposed by different scientists. You can make one page about models or spread them through the brochure. Include the following

· 3 different past models (3pts)

· who proposed each one (3pts)

· present model – showing all of the parts, labeled (7pts)

4. Metaphors (2pts/pic, 2pts/metaphor = 8pts total)

Requirements: We will discuss in class how atoms and molecules are related to one another. You will need to make up and include at least two different metaphors that explain their relationship. Each metaphor needs to include a picture.

5. Video/General Facts (4pts)

Requirements: Video facts. In class, we will be watching a video on the atom. Bill Nye will describe, act out, experiment, discuss, and interpret many different facts about the atom and you will need to include at least four of these facts on your brochure.

6. Bibliography/Works Cited (7pts)

Requirements: You will need to include a list of places that you got information for your brochure from. Include class notes, Bill Nye Atoms Movie, and any books or websites that you use to find information.
