PurposeThis unit standard is intended for those who are currently working, or intend to work, in jobs which involve packaging canned food or related products using automated equipment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to: use safe working practices; prepare to package canned food or related products; and operate food or related products automated equipment.

2Definitions

Equipmentrefers to automated bundling, wrapping, or packaging equipment. Examples of brand names include: Hi-cone, Mumm-Six Packer, Mead BasketWrap multi pack, Oystar Jones packer, Kister.

Organisational procedures refer to documents that include: worksite rules, codes, and practices; equipment operating instructions; production specifications; documented quality management systems; and health and safety requirements.

Packaging materialsrefer to hi-cone, trays, cartons, 6 packs, 12 packs, 24 packs, 36 packs, dividers, shrink wrap, glue, adhesive tape.

PPE refers to personal protective equipment and may include but is not limited to: protective clothing; gloves; safety glasses, headwear, and footwear; hearing protection; safety devices.

Products refer to canned foods, beverages, and household or personal care products.

Related productsrefer to beverages, and household or personal care products.

3Range

Competence is to be demonstrated on at least two occasions of packaging canned food or related products using automated equipment.

Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Use safe working practices.

Performance criteria

1.1PPE is used in accordance with organisational procedures.

1.2Work environment is clean and free from hazards in accordance with organisational procedures.

Rangehazards to – personnel, product, plant.

1.3Documentation is referred to and/or completed in accordance with organisational procedures.

Element 2

Prepare automated equipment to package canned food or related products.

Performance criteria

2.1Packaging preparation is carried out in accordance with organisational procedures.

2.2Automated equipment is set up and confirmed as operational in accordance with organisational procedures.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – correct glue temperature, correct air pressure.

2.3Sensors are checked to ensure they are unobstructed, aligned, and operational in accordance with organisational procedures.

Rangesensors may include but are not limited to – in-feed, equipment, interlocks, out-feed.

2.4Packaging materials are checked in accordance with organisational procedures.

Rangecorrect type, quantity.

2.5Product for packaging is checked in accordance with organisational procedures.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – quantity, quality.

Element 3

Operate automated equipment to package food and related products.

Performance criteria

3.1Operation of equipment is in accordance with organisational procedures.

3.2Glue level is maintained in accordance with organisational procedures.

3.3Packaging material jams are identified and cleared to optimise production and minimise danger to operator, in accordance with organisational procedures.

3.4Packaging material change-overs are made with minimal disruption to production in accordance with organisational procedures.

3.5Product and packaging material wastage due to operation of automated equipment is minimised in accordance with organisational procedures.

3.6Variations in specified technical performance of automated equipment are identified, rectified and/or reported in accordance with organisational procedures.

Rangevariations may include but are not limited to – sound of machine, safety, speed, quality, reliability.

3.7Packaged product is checked in accordance with organisational procedures.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – fold position, thickness of board or card, packaging width, depth, height or shape.

Please note

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.

Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
