Title / Weave carpet on a wilton carpet weaving machine

Purpose / This unit standard is for people working in the carpet manufacturing industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of wilton loom operation; prepare to operate a wilton loom; operate the loom and monitor the weaving process; and keep the loom and work area clean.

Critical health and safety prerequisites / Prerequisite: Unit 7213, Manage a wilton carpet creel and monitor weaving; or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.

Explanatory notes

1Plant safety practices and procedures comply with Health and Safety in Employment (HSE) Act 1992, and workplace procedures.

2Workplace productivity and quality requirements are met.

3Competence can be demonstrated on narrow loom or broad loom.

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of wilton loom operation.

Evidence requirements

1.1Carpet construction is described in terms of pile and backing formation.

Rangechain and stuffer yarn, weft yarn, backing weave sequence, pile construction, pattern and texture formation.

1.2Wilton mechanisms and components are described in terms of function and operation.

Rangecreel, weft insertion mechanism, shed formation system, carpet take-up, pile formation, jacquard pattern mechanism, end out detectors.

Outcome 2

Prepare to operate a wilton loom.

Evidence requirements

2.1Loom is prepared in accordance with workplace safety procedures.

2.2Creel loading and thread up meet creel pattern requirement.

2.3Beam is in place, and warp yarn is tied on according to workplace practice.

2.4Weft yarn is loaded in accordance with work instruction.

2.5Jacquard patterning mechanism is loaded and prepared according to work instructions.

2.6Inspection piece meets product standard.

Outcome 3

Operate the loom and monitor weaving process.

Evidence requirements

3.1Loom is operated according to workplace practice, and in accordance with workplace safety procedures.

3.2Weaving faults are identified, and action is taken according to workplace procedure.

Rangeweaving faults identified in workplace inspection procedure.

3.3Warp and weft yarn faults are identified, and action is taken according to workplace procedure.

Rangeyarn breaks mended, thick and thin yarn.

3.4Yarn feed is monitored and maintained according to workplace practice.

Rangeyarns are feeding freely, knots causing blockages are removed, pattern sequence is maintained.

3.5Loom malfunction is identified, and action is taken according to workplace procedure.

3.6Weaving records are maintained according to workplace practice.

Outcome 4

Keep the loom and work area clean.

Evidence requirements

4.1Work area is kept clean, and all waste material is collected and sorted according to type to prevent contamination.

4.2Loom components are kept free of unwanted fibre during processing according to plant requirement and in accordance with plant safety procedures.

4.3Loom is cleaned at end of a job according to plant requirement and in accordance with plant safety procedures.
