Explanatory notes

1Plant safety practices and procedures comply with Health and Safety in Employment (HSE) Act 1992, and workplace procedures.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of the carpet backing process.

Evidence requirements

1.1Backing line sections are described in terms of their function and operation.

Rangefeed-in, steamer, bow and skew adjustment, chemical applicators, jute latex applicator, direct coat applicator, dryer, secondary backing supply, dryer controls, and other equipment installed in the workplace.

Outcome 2

Prepare a backing line for operation.

Evidence requirements

2.1Machine is prepared in accordance with workplace safety procedures.

2.2Daily set-up routine is according to workplace procedure.

Rangeline to temperature, thread up sequence, latex in tanks, secondary backing supply, applicator and foamer.

2.3Carpet batch conforms to work instruction.

2.4Machine settings produce finished carpet to specification.

2.5Tests confirm latex condition and application rate.

Rangeweight test, density test.

Outcome 3

Sew carpet to leader or previous carpet piece.

Evidence requirements

3.1Sewing machine is adjusted and used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

3.2Joins are straight and trimmed according to workplace practice.

3.3Pile lay direction is according to workplace practice.

Outcome 4

Operate and a monitor carpet backing line.

Evidence requirements

4.1Backing line is operated in accordance with workplace safety procedures.

4.2Backing line is operated according to workplace procedure.

4.3Sections are monitored and adjusted to produce product to specification.

Rangelatex application, latex supply, bow and skew, latex curing.

4.4Secondary backing supply is monitored and maintained.

Rangetype and width identified, joined and tensioned, creases avoided.

4.5Backing line faults are identified, and are acted on according to workplace practice.

Outcome 5

Carry out close down procedures.

Evidence requirements

5.1Close down routine is according to workplace procedures.

Rangeleader cloth fed, sections stopped in sequence, rollers and tanks cleaned, applicator and foamer cleaned.

5.2Work area is kept clean, and all waste material is collected and sorted according to type to prevent contamination.

5.3Backing line is cleaned at end of a batch according to plant requirement and in accordance with plant safety procedures.
