WELCOME TO PIXIES
Pixiesis a small, homely settingsituated in the heart of Brighton.
The first five years of life is a very formative period during a child's development. For this reason, at Pixies we aim to provide a safe, loving, stimulating and fun environment where children can play, learn and develop their potential in the early years of their life. Our objectives are to allow children to make choices, nurturing their individuality and assisting them to gain self-esteem and confidence. We aim to ensure the quality of our provision for the care and education of all the children, recognising their needs and celebrating their diversities.
Pixieswas established by Paula Cowell in 2005 when she started offering care and education for children as a Childminder. Paula has, over the past 11 years accessed a wide variety of training and through studying child development gained many qualifications culminating in her graduating Sussex University as an Early Years Professional. Paula is passionate about using daily outings to expand on what the children learn through indoor activities, patterns in puddles, counting ducks on the pond, the sound and smell of real cows and sheep and watching paint mix then dribble away in the rain.

Staff
The staff team at Pixiesis made up of qualified and experiencedEarly Years Practitionersand experienced assistants. We also have students and trainee Early Years practitioners from time to time. All staff, students and trainees are subject to DBS checks. At the setting we operate a system of key groups. This means that each child is allocated a key person (a member of staff) who is responsible for observing and recording your child’s progress, being your point of contact at Pixies and dealing with any problems that may arise. This does not mean that other staff are not involved with your child, as everybody spends time daily with each other. The key group represents a focal point for your child and ensures that nobody is left out. Parents are encouraged to discuss their child’s progress and daily programme with their key person, and should feel free to contact them at any time.
We use an online journal for the children’s progress records called Tapestry. This is an interactive system that enables parents to see their child’s progress within the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage), and contribute to the journal themselves.

Settling in
All children will experience some anxiety when first being left in a new environment. Some children will adapt very quickly and without too much distress, however, others will take a lot longer and will need more comfort and support. It is, therefore very important that children are given as much time as they need to settle in before being left at the setting for a long period of time (we do not charge for settling in time). Most of all we want your child to be happy. It often helps if a child brings with him/her a familiar object from home. An initial meeting will be arranged with your child’s key person to discuss your child’s needs, any family matters pertinent to their care and to address any concerns you may have.
Meals
At Pixies we actively promote healthy eating, serving fresh fruit and vegetables every day.The setting has it’s own kitchen where the meals are prepared and cooked each day, the children are often encouraged to participate in preparing some meals where they are able to do so safely. We have a four-week menu offering a healthy balanced diet. Dietary requirements are catered for. Where a child requires a special diet due to medical reasons it will be strictly adhered to.
Activities
It is the aim of the setting to provide many and varied experiences to help your child develop to the best of their ability, and realise their potential. The setting is organised to give opportunities for free or guided play, both inside and outdoors.
Play is a very important educational activity for children.
Through play children can develop creativity, grow in intellect and build relationships with others. We deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum in which each child will have their educational needs met.
Equal opportunities
The nursery operates a policy of equal opportunities, which is seen as an integral part of the daily running of the nursery.
Pixies bases it’s values on the premise that all children, carers, staff and students are equal individuals and can be expected to be so treated, irrespective of race, gender, class, disability, cultural, linguistic or religious background. Children should be freely able to develop positive attitudes to differences of race, culture, language and gender during their time at the nursery. Pixies incorporates multi-cultural activities in all themes and encourages both genders in non-stereotype activities.
If you have any queries or concerns, we will be only too happy to discuss them with you at a mutually convenient time. We look forward to seeing you and your child for a visit.
