6th Grade Science Due Date: Friday, February 20th
Scientists: Atomic Theory
Standards for Criteria and Success
The students will be able to reflect on the impacts of Science by (Criterion D):
i. Summarize the way in which science is applied and used to address a specific problem or issue.
ii. Describe and summarize the various implication of using science and its application in solving a specific problem or issue.
iii. Apply scientific language effectively.
iv. Document the work of others and sources of information used.
Procedure
Step 1- Research a Scientist
Our planet is made up of 90 natural elements. Of these 90, only 25 or so are used to buildliving things. The elements, parts of the elements, and how we currently organize these elements were discovered by many scientists over the centuries. Your job is to choose one of the scientists from the selected list below and research as much information about the person as possible.
SCIENTISTS
John Dalton / Dmitri Medeleev / Enrico Fermi / Albert Einstein / Marie CurieDr. Donna Nelson / Ernest Rutherford / Gertrude B. Elion / Hennig Brand / Antoine Bequerel
Sir Willion Ramsay / Lord Rayleigh / James Chadwick / Robert Oppenheimer / Klaus Fuchs
Issac Newton / Gerd Binnig / Heinrich Rohrer / Lothar Meyer / Glenn Seaborg
Democritus / J.J. Thomson / Hantaro Nagaoka / Max Planck / Aristotle
Erwin Schrodinger / Niels Bohr / Sir Francis Bacon / Henry Cavendish / Jakob Berzelius
Step 2- Written Report
Once you have chosen your scientist and done extensive research on his/her contributions to the scientific world, you will then write a three paragraph essay that explains their influence on science. Use the questions below to help guide you in your writing.
Question 1: What was their influence on science?
- What discovery or contribution did they make to the scientific world?
- Did they solve any problems or issues?
Question 2: How does their contribution to science impact our way of living today?
- Did they invent an element that we use in our everyday lives?
- How would life be different without their contribution?
Step 3- Oral Presentation
After researching and writing about your scientist of choice, you will then take the information you have gained about this individual in order to create a two-minute oral presentation that highlights the scientist’s most important contributions to science. This two-minute speech will need to be memorized in order to perform it during the exhibition night on February 26th.
Step 4 – Exhibition
On February 4th, the parents of the entire sixth grade will be invited to attend the Chemistry Exhibition night. This exhibition will be setup like a wax museum. Each student will dress-up like his/her scientist of choice and will stand in one position as if they were a wax mannequin. The parents will walk around and touch the “Play” button on any student they wish. The student will then have to perform their two-minute oral presentation about their scientist.
The final project will include the following:
- Accurate information on your chosen scientist’s contributions to the atomic theory
- 3 paragraph written research paper
- Two minute speech that summarizes your scientist’s accomplishments
- An outfit that resembles your scientist’s appearance
- Works Cited
Audience:
Madame Tussauds wax museum in New York City is looking to launch an exhibition on the Periodic Table of Elements. The museum is looking to fill the exhibit with 25 wax mannequins representing different scientists who have made major contributions to the scientific world.
