6th Grade MathParent LetterChapter 5

There are two big ideas we will be focusing our instruction around in chapter 5: First, students will be reviewing multiplication of fractions; Second, students will further their understanding of calculating area given various shapes. Our goal is to keep a balance of skill based learning along with enhancing our student’s ability to problem solve and think conceptually.

Review Material from Prior Grades
5.NF.B.7
Dividing unit fractions by whole numbers and visa versa.
5.NBT.B.5
Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers
5.NBT.B.6
Find whole number quotients
5.NBT.B.7
Operations with decimals
5.NF.B.4b
Find area of a rectangle with fractional side lengths
New Material for 6th Grade
6.NS.B.3
Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation.
6.RP.3c
Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.
c)  Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent.
6.G.1
Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
End of Chapter Expectations
1)  Skills assessment will cover all of the material from prior grades.
2)  Quiz on the new material as it relates to conceptual understanding.
3)  Performance-Based Assessment where students will work through problems covered in prior chapters.
4)  Chapter assessment will cover the following skills: *
·  Division of whole numbers
·  Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals
·  Multiply fractions
·  Calculate area of various shapes, (triangles, trapezoids, parallelograms, etc.)

*Please note the list above highlights the main skills to be assessed. Teachers may include additional content to meet the needs of their students.
