6th Grade Glimpse

August 21 – September 25

Counselor’s Corner: Congratulations to the winners of the 2015-16 STUCO elections. There will be an all STUCO member meeting on Friday, September 21st at 7:30am. Please plan to attend. We will be continuing our discussion on bullying this week focusing on the different types of bullying including cyber, verbal, non-verbal, physical, and sexual. We will be discussing how to be a helpful individual when we see or hear of bullying happening instead of being a bystander. Students will be creating “Don’t Be a Bystander” poster during their seminar time. Please save your Box Tops and turn them into Mrs. Rankin or myself. It is a great way for our STUCO to raise money!

Science: This week we will begin our unit on measurement. Students should be able to measure length to the nearest millimeter, mass to the nearest gram, volume to the nearest milliliter, temperature to the nearest degree C, and time to the nearest second.

Reading: We will be continuing our first literature unit this week, Fiction and Nonfiction. We will be looking at themes and central ideas in texts in order to answer the Big Question for this unit: “How do we decide what is true?”. Our focus will be on literary elements, continuing with characterization. We will be taking our first Acuity test on Thursday, Sept. 24th. Reading logs are due Sept. 28th. All 6th grade classes meet on Blue day and we will visit the library every Blue Wednesday, in order to take AR tests and check out/renew books. 6th Grade Math : Students will start Chapter 2, “Introduction to Algebra. Students will learn how to solve algebraic expressions by substituting for variables. Students will also learn how to translate between word statements, algebraic expressions, and tables.

6th Grade Accelerated Math : Students will continue with Chapter 2 by learning how to translate between word statements, algebraic expressions, and tables.

Communication Arts: G5 will begin Spelling Lesson 2 on Monday with the test on Friday. We will begin working on pronouns and using details from text to support written answers. Reminder: All homework assignments that receive a grade below a C may be redone for half credit. Assignments must be asked for that day and are due the next class time. Encourage your student to take advantage of this opportunity if needed.

Social Studies: This week students will learn about ancient Sumer along the Assyrians and Chaldeans. If you have any questions my email is . My plan time is 9:28 to 10:52 on both Gold and Blue Days.

FACS: The students will be discussing care of laundry. We will be beginning our sewing projects very soon so please make sure and pay your child’s lab fee of $7.

Art: The class will continue designing and creating 3D Plaster Face Masks. They need to bring in a towel, a wash cloth, and something to hold their hair back off their face for this project. (head bands, shower caps, etc. will work) They will draw sketches for ideas and will then work in pairs to create plaster face casts. Many students have not brought in their supplies yet…they need a roll of masking tape, their 2B and 6B pencils, a Magic Rub Eraser, and a kneadable Eraser. If you can’t supply these items for your child please send me a message and I’ll try to make other arrangements for these items.

Rhonda Boedeker Conference: Gold 4 and Blue 4 from 11:40-1:32.

Vocal: 6th grade students have been sight-reading and studying several pieces of two-part choral music. All of these pieces have a theme of U.S. or world geography. Students have also been learning about Mozart, our composer of the week. Please send in t-shirt money and order forms by October 1.

Band: I have started offering free after school tutoring sessions on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. Students who wish to participate may sign up for a 15 minute time slot on my office door. Practice log are due on Monday (gold) and Tuesday (blue) of next week. If you need a new log, you print one from the “documents” tab of our website (huserkbands.weebly.com). Lastly, all students will need a blue music t-shirt to wear for concerts. If you do not currently own one, or have not yet sent an order in, please return the blue order form by October 1st. RISE: Students will continue to explore the Lego WeDo curriculum and also work on programming in Scratch. Each student is working on a project of their choice. They will also continue researching their topics for their independent study project that will continue throughout the semester. In our Conflicts curriculum next week our focus will be: Enduring Understanding-Conflicts may occur in everyday life. Guiding Questions-Why did discrimination continue against African Americans long after the Emancipation Proclamation? With all the historical accounts of discrimination, why does discrimination continue to occur?

Health and Physical Education: This week's Health Notes discussed "Coping with Loss" and " Getting Along with Your Family." If your student misses notes, it is their responsibility to get notes from the teacher. Mrs. Briney’s class will continue with their Tennis unit, while Mr. Dudley’s class will continue their soccer unit. Please help remind your child to pack clothes for class. Health Enrichment: Students have been involved in some serious class discusions over the affects of Alcohol and Addiction. Students will continue in chapter 14 and start discussing issues with feeling the pressure. It is important for you to discuss what they are learning and how they are feeling during these topics.
