Course Description:
The purpose of 6th grade English is to acclimate students to the three modes of writing. Students will learn how to develop entertaining narratives, thought provoking informational essays, and argumentative pieces with clear rebuttals through modeled experiences as well as the writing process. Students will also begin citing textual evidence in their writing this year using the Point-Quote-Analyze format. A key part to a well-developed writing piece is grammar. Students will have mini-lessons about each part of speech. As per Kentucky 6th grade English Language Arts standards, pronouns usage will be a grammar focus during this school year. All classes will also have weekly vocabulary words to enhance their current terminology .

Technology in the Classroom:

With the current implementation of BYOD, I will be utilizing Edmodo and Remind 101’s services in my classroom this year.

Edmodo provides teachers and students a secure place to connect and collaborate, share content and educational applications, and access homework, grades, class discussions and notifications. Our goal is to help educators harness the power of social media to customize the classroom for each and every learner. Each student will receive a code for his/her specific class period: qn9ach

Remind 101 is a text messaging service that allows me to communicate important information and reminders safely with students and parents. Please note the following:

-The number (573) 535-5512 is NOT my personal cell phone number

-Students can NOT respond to the texts I send through Remind101

-Phone numbers are private and secure. Participating numbers are not seen by teachers, students, parents, etc.

-Standard text message rates DO apply

-You must join to receive the text reminders

-It is helpful to save the number (573) 535-5512 as a contact to eliminate confusion between multiple teachers using Remind101

You do NOT have to have an iPhone to receive messages. Any phone with text messaging capabilities will work. If you would like to join and receive this very convenient way to communicate, please text @whittle3 to (573) 535-5512. This code is class period specific. It is very important that you use @whittle3 to ensure the most relevant and appropriate messages are sent to you.
