PARSONAGE PONDERINGS

by Suellen Leugers

CHRIST IS RISEN!! We celebrated once again this marvelous fact that Jesus Christ is alive and living in us and in our world. Our individual relationship to Him varies as does our hair and eye color and our personality. But together we are a force in the world for sharing love and grace with others. Elton Trueblood is a renowned theologian and has written about Christ’s enduring words. He writes: “Before Jesus came, the common people were considered unworthy of education. The first asylums and hospitals were often established in the name of Christ. So were schools. Christ’s disciples were in a remote part of the Roman Empire, having no standing, no money, no prestige, no worldy power, no education. Conse-quently, from a human point of view, the chance of their enduring was very slight, while the idea that they could redeem or save the civilization of the world was obviously fantastic.

In spite of all such considerations, Jesus made His tremendous predictions about the world, and people thought him a fool. Nearly all of the rest of the things on which men depended did decay. The Roman Empire did come to an end; Plato’s Academy finally closed; the great library of Alexandria was finally burned; the legions were scattered; the schools of the Stoics and the Epicureans faded out. But the little redemptive society which Christ instituted as the divine preservative went on. It en-trenched itself in the Greco-Roman world; it penetrated Caesar’s household; it carried men through the Dark Ages; it survived the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Enlightenment, and the Industrial Revolution, as it is now surviving the Atomic Revolution. Your presence here thousands of miles from the place where the original pronouncement was made, is one modest evidence that it is still going on. The incredible has occurred.”

When I read this, it helps me know that if Christ has led and guided countless men and women since the days He walked the earth, He will continue to do the same for each of us. Many people through the ages have tried to wipe Christianity off the face of the earth; it has never happened, and I for one believe it never will. I hope each of you will believe that as well.

On May 24 I will be having a moving sale—8:00-4:00. I’ll be setting up in the driveway (weather permitting) and also have some things in the yard. There will be a variety of furniture, kitchen items and much more, so come by and take a look, chat and enjoy what by then should be warmer weather.

Relishing each moment spent with you as the time for my leaving comes closer. My, it is coming fast!

MASTER BOARD MINUTES 3/30/14

by Sandra Yeaton, Clerk

Present: Gordon Gillens, Deb Johnson, Sue Kelley, Suellen Leugers, Jim Longacre, Jeff Moore, Mark Overman, Rosie Pelletier, Nancy Scott, Jesse Stalker, Sandra Yeaton

Absent: Loretta Weitzel

Treasurer’s Report: Deb wrote a check to reimburse Mark for kitchen materials. He also received a check from PCW. Deb reported that money is tight right now, but another dinner is coming up in April.

Parsonage: We should form a Parsonage Repair Committee, preferably not from the Master Board. The Moderator will ask for volunteers. Suellen’s bedroom and both bathrooms have been done.

Jeff thanked Mark & Rosie for all the work they have done on the church.

Jesse moved that we consolidate all investments into one brokerage service so that we get only one check per month. Motion was approved.

Organ: The Quimby Music Fund CD of $3672.50 was moved into our ABEC Emergency Repair fund. Currently $5800 is available for organ work. Bob Waters’ bill will wipe that out. We will lose quite a bit of space in the organ loft, and the bell rope will need to be moved, when the suggested repairs are finished. Jeff moved we hold a special meeting on April 27 to approve spending the money.

The downstairs furnace did not come on today. It called for heat, but only the blower came on. Jesse will call Simple Energy.
