Vocabulary

Mixture: A mixture is two or more materials stirred together.

Property: A property is a characteristic of an object, something you can observe such as size, color, shape, or texture. (You should know the properties of a salt crystal and some of the properties of the other chemicals we used in class).

Solution: A solution is a special mixture formed when a material dissolves in water. (There are a few special conditions that must be met, 1) it must be see through 2) you cannot filter out the material)

Dissolving: Dissolving is a process in which one material disperses uniformly into another material, so that the first material seems to disappear. (Salt can dissolve in water).

Solvent and Solute: A solution is made of two parts, the solvent and the solute. The solvent is the liquid, and thesolute is the solid that dissolves in the solvent.

Saturated Solution: When a solute dissolves in a solvent until no more will dissolve, the result is a saturated solution.

Solubility: Solubility is the property that substances have of dissolving in solvents, such as the solubility of salt in water.

Concentration: Concentration is the amount of material dissolved in a measure of liquid.

Dilute: To dilute is to make a solution less concentrated, usually by adding more liquid.

Volume: Volume is the three-dimensional space occupied by something. (It is how we measured liquid).

Chemical Reaction: When two or more materials (chemicals) are mixed together and a change occurs, a chemical reaction has taken place.

Precipitate: A precipitate is a solid material that forms as a product of a reaction.

Change: Is the process of becoming something different.

Reactants: When two chemicals react when they are mixed, the chemicals are called reactants.
