Purpose / This theory-based unit standard is for people in the automotive repair industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of fuel injection system operation, and electronic fuel system fault diagnosis and repair.

1Definition

Service information may include but is not limited to – technical information of a vehicle, machine, or product detailing operation; installation and servicing procedures; manufacturer instructions and specifications; technical terms and descriptions; and detailed illustrations. This can be accessed in hard copy or electronic format and is normally sourced from the manufacturer.

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of fuel injection system operation.

Evidence requirements

1.1Fuel injection circuit layout and function are described in accordance with service information.

Rangeair flow circuit, fuel supply circuit, control circuit.

1.2Sensor function and their operation in electronic controlled systems are explained in accordance with service information.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – air mass sensors, fuel supply units, temperature sensors, oxygen sensors.

1.3Control unit function and operation are explained in accordance with service information.

Rangemethods of measurement, open and closed loop, warm-up cycle, acceleration, deceleration, cruising.

1.4The operation of electronic fuel systems is described in accordance with service information.

Outcome 2

Demonstrate knowledge of electronic fuel system fault diagnosis and repair.

Evidence requirements

2.1Range, compatibility, and use of test equipment for diagnosing faults are described in accordance with service information.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – air flow circuit, fuel supply circuit, control circuit;

multimeter, oscilloscope, pressure gauge, vacuum pump, light emitting diode (LED) test light.

2.2Methods of testing system operation are explained in accordance with service information.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – air intake system, fuel supply system, sensor system, computer control system, self-diagnostic system.

2.3Servicing precautions to observe are described in accordance with service information.

Rangeworking with high pressure fuel, working with and storing electronic controls and computer systems.

2.4Servicing procedures as specified by the manufacturer are described in accordance with service information.

Rangevisual inspection, adjustments, verifying the problem, repairing and replacing components.
