Aran Sweater

An Aran pullover in chest sizes 32, 34, 36, 38. The style is suitable for a woman, a man (size small), or a teen-ager.

Materials

5 (6, 6, 7) 4-oz skeins of off white knitting worsted, 1 pair #5, #6 needles, 1 #5 dp needles, 1 cable needle (optional).

Gauge 6 sts and 6 rows = 1 inch.

Panel motifs

Pattern 1: Tree of Life Multiple of 11 sts.

Row 1: p5, k1. p5.

Row 2: k5, p1, k5.

Row 3: p3,c2b (sl1 st on cable needle and leave at back of work, k1, p1 st from cable), k1, c2f (sl1 st on cable needle and leave at front of work, p1, k1 st from cable needle), p3.

Row 4: k3, yfwd, sl 1, ybk, k1, p1, k1, yfwd, sl 1, ybk, k3.

Row 5: p2, c2b, p1, k1, p1, c2f, p2.

Row 6: k2, yfwd, sl 1, ybk, k2, p1, k2, yfwd, sl 1, ybk, k2.

Row 7: p1, c2b, p2, k1, p2, c2f, p1.

Row 8: k1, yfwd, sl 1, ybk, k3, p1, k3, yfwd, sl 1, ybk, k1.

Pattern 2: Coiled cable. Multiple of 14 sts.

Row 1: ybk, sl 1, yfwd, p2, sl 4 sts on cable needle and leave at front of work, k4, k4 sts from dp needle, p2, ybk, sl 1.

Row 2, 4, 6, and 8: p1, k2, p8, k2, p1.

Row 3, 5, 7: ybk, sl 1, yfwd, p2, k8, p2, ybk, sl 1.

Pattern 3: Popcorn variation.Multiple of 3.

Row 1: p1, k into front and back of next st 5 times, then slip the 2 nd , 3 rd ,4 th , and 5 thsts over the 1 stst one, p1.

Row 2, 4, 6, 8: knit.

Row 3, 5, 7: purl.

Pattern 4: Honeycomb (center Panel) Multiple of 38 sts.

Row 1: ybk, sl 1, yfwd, p2, * c4b [sl 2 sts on dp needle and leave at back of work, k2, k2 sts from dp needle], c4f [sl 2 sts on dp needle and leave at front of work, k2, k2 sts from dp needle] *, rep from * 3 times, p2, ybk, sl 1.

Row 2, 4, 6, 8: p1, k2, p 32, k2, p1.

Row 3 and 7: ybk, sl 1, yfwd, p2, k 32, p2, ybk, sl 1.

Row 5: ybk, sl 1, yfwd, p2, * c4f, c4b, *, rep from * 3 times, p2, ybk, sl 1.

Sweater Back:

Using # 5 needles cast on 98 (104, 110, 116) sts. Work 1 x 1 ribbing for 3", ending with a right side Row.

Purl across the wrong side.

Change to #6 needles.

Pattern Row 1: k2 (5, 8, 11), over next 94 sts establish patterns 1, 2, 3, 4, 3, 2, and 1, k2 (5, 8, 11).

Pattern Row 2: p2 (5, 8, 11), over next 94 sts, p2 (5, 8, 11). Continue working in pattern until piece measures 16 (16 ½ , 17, 17) inches.

Shape Raglan: Bind off 5 (6, 7, 8) sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Next Row: k2, k2 tog tbl, work in pattern to last 4 sts, k2 tog, k2.

Following Row: p3, work in pattern to last 3 sts, p3.

Rep last 2 rows 19 (21, 23, 25) times.

Next Row: k2, k3 tog tbl, work in pattern to last 5 sys, k3 tog, k2. Dec same way every other Row 2 times more. Place remaining 36 sts on holder.

Armhole measure 7 ½ (8 ¼, 9, 9 ½) inches.

Front: Work as for back until 62 (64, 66, 68) sts remain, ending with a wrong-side row.

Shaping Neck: k2, k2 tog tbl, work in pattern for next 17 (18, 19, 20) sts, turn.

Bind off 2 sts, work to end.

Dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 4 time; at same time, dec 1 st at armhole every other row 6 (7, 8, 9) times, ending with a wrong side row; turn.

K2, k3 tog tbl, work to end.

Dec same way every other row twice more.

Bind off rem 2 sts.

Put center 20 sts on holder. Join yarn to next st, work left front to correspond.

Using #5 needles, cast on 44 (46, 48, 50) sts; work in ribbing for 3 inches, ending with right side row.

Purl across wrong side increasing 4 (6, 8, 8) sts evenly across the row. You should have 48 (52, 56, 58) sts.

Change to #6 needles.

Pattern Row 1: k1 (3, 1, 2), p2, cable 8 sts as in pattern 2, p2, ybk, sl 1, yfwd, p2, cable 16 (16, 24, 24) sts as in pattern4, p2, ybk, sl 1, yfwd, p2, cable 8, p2, k1 (3, 1, 2). Continue in pattern, increasing 1 st (In stockinette) at both ends every 1 ½ " until you have 62 (68, 74, 80) sts. Work these sts until piece measures 17 ½ (18, 18, 18 ½ ) inches, ending with wrong side Row.

Shaping Raglan: Bind off 5 (6,7, 8) sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Next Row: k2, k2 tog tbl, work in pattern to last 4 sts, k2 tog, k2. Dec the same way every other Row 21 (23, 25, 27) more times. Place rem 8 sts on holder.

Neckband: Sew raglans together.

Right side facing you, using dp needles, k the 36 sts from back holder, decreasing 6 (6, 4, 4) sts evenly across 30 (30, 32, 32) sts remain. K8 sts of one sleeve, dec 1 st at beg and end: 6 sts remain. Pick up and k 11 (12, 13, 14) sts along one neck edge, k 20 center sts, pick up and k 11 (12, 13, 14) sts along other side of neck; you should have 42 (44, 46, 48) sts for the front neck. K8 sts of other sleeve, decreasing 1 st at beg and end; total of 84 (86, 90, 92) sts for neck.

Work in 1 x 1 ribbing for ½ inch. Bind off.

Finishing: Sew side and sleeve seams. Fold neckband in half and sew to inside of neck.
