4th International Baltic Ballet Competition 2018

1.  General conditions

1.1. The Fourth International Baltic Ballet Competition, IV IBBC 2018 is organized in Riga (Latvia) with the support of the Latvian Ballet and Dance Guild and Riga Choreography School is scheduled to take place from June 18. 2018 till June 22, 2018.

1.2. Goals of the Competition:

·  Maintaining and preserving the traditions of classical ballet

·  Development of dance education

·  Creative development of dancer’s personality and their performance skills

·  Discovering new talent and providing opportunities for creative self-expression

·  Improving effectiveness of professional education within new generations

·  Developing international creative collaborations

·  Cultural exchange

1.3. The students of choreography schools as well as ballet artists can participate in the

competition if they conform the requirements of the general conditions

1.4. The participating dancers are divided into 3 (three) groups corresponding their age:

1)  Junior (12-14 years old*)

2)  Pre-professional (15-18 years old*)

3)  Professional (19-26 years old*)

*At the competition moment

1.5. The Competition consists of 3 (three) rounds:

1)  Round 1 – Video

·  One classical variation or Pas de Deux - according to the list (the list of variations is included in the annex №3)

*Junior group can perform classical variation according to the list (Annex №3) or

a similar choreography of a classical variation

·  One contemporary variation or duet from 20-21.centuries choreography

2)  Round 2 –

·  One classical variation or Pas de Deux – according to the list (Annex №3)

* Junior group can perform classical variation according to the list (Annex №3) or a

similar choreography of a classical variation

·  One contemporary variation or duet from 20-21.centuries choreography

* Round 1 and Round 2 variations can be the same

3)  Round 3 – Final Round

·  Two classical variations or one Pas de Deux – according to the list (Annex №3)

*Junior group in final round take part with one variation according to the list (Annex №3).

1.6. Classical variations and contemporary solo is not to exceed 3 minutes, duets are not to exceed 5 minutes. Pas de Deux is not to exceed 12 minutes.

1.7. The participant is responsible for providing the copyrights for the music performance and original choreography performance.

1.8. All three rounds are to be performed with the stage light of the classical ballet. Additional stage lights are available for Gala Concert only.

1.9. The participants of Round 2 are selected and invited by the Organizers after reviewing and assessing the submitted video recording (Round 1).

1.10. The best dancers and winners participate in the Gala Concert (according to the decision of the Jury).

1.11. After Round 2, the top 50 % of the dancers who have gained the highest score continue into the Final Round.

3. Musical accompaniment

3.1. Participants are to provide high quality CD recordings with a good quality orchestral accompaniment. CDs are to be submitted during the Registration. (The musical accompaniment during the rehearsals at the RCS is to be provided by the applicant him-/herself)

3.2. Each variation is to be recorded in a separate CD (wav. file), clearly labeled with the title of the performance as well as the first name, last name and country of the applicant.

4.  Disqualification

The International Jury can disqualify the participant if one or more of the following are true:

4.1. The musical accompaniment is other than the good quality orchestral phonogram.

4.2. The program of the competitor does not correspond the general requirements of the Competition.

4.3. The duration of the contemporary dance exceeds the timing by more than 30 seconds.

5. The Jury.

5.1. The competitors are evaluated by the international Jury, representing the leading ballet artists of the world.

5.2. The Jury employs the statutes and regulations provided by the Organizers of the Competition.

5.3. The decision of the Jury is final, is no subject to negotiations, and can’t be appealed.

6. Scoring.

6.1. The Jury evaluates the competitors according to the 25-point scoring system, approved by the Organizers of the Competition.

6.2. Each of the performances of the competitor is evaluated by the separate amount of points, which is then summarized and forms the final score.

6.3. The results of the Final Round are being discussed among the members of the Jury, taking into consideration the performance of the laureate in each of the Rounds.

7. Prizes

7.1. Junior group:

·  First Prize – Education at the best ballet schools in Europe.

·  Second Prize - Education at the best ballet schools in Europe.

·  Third Prize - Education at the best ballet schools in Europe.

Sponsor and partner special prizes available for the Junior group.

7.2. Pre-professional group:

·  First Prize – EUR 2000,-

·  Second Prize – EUR 1000,-

·  Third Prize – EUR 700,-

7.3. Professional group:

·  First Prize – EUR 2500,-

·  Second Prize – EUR 1500,-

·  Third Prize – EUR 800,-

7.4. Each of the participants receives a diploma.

7.5. All the prizes are presented during the Gala Concert on June 20, 2018.

8. Drawing Lots

8.1. Drawing of lots will take place on June 18, 2018 at 11:00 o’clock at the Riga

Choreography School (112 Kalnciema street, Riga). In case of absence of the competitor, the Organizer holds the rights to draw the number of the sequence.

8.2. In case of an illness or injury of the competitor or his/her partner (confirmed with the

doctor’s note), the Organizers hold the rights to allow the performance to take place

on another day of the Competition.

9. Rehearsals

9.1. The Organizers provide the competitors with the premises for rehearsals in Riga

Choreography School as well as the rehearsal for the participants of Round 2 (5

minutes, Pas de Deux or duets 10 minutes) on the stage of the Theatre (the Daile

Theatre)with the director of music and lighting designer. A detailed schedule will be

provided.

9.2. The Organizers inform the competitors regarding the additional rehearsals on the

stage, if the possibility arises.

10. Application

10.1. To apply for the Competition, the application letter is to be sent to the Organizers

at: by April 15, 2018. The application letter should include the

following information:

10.3. Curriculum Vitae (CV) of the participant, including the overall information

on the participant, mandatory information – education in dance and

choreography, artistic experience, participation in competitions. CV can be in

English, Russian, or Latvian ( Microsoft Office Word formatting).

10.4. Copies of reviews, press reviews, etc., if applicable

10.5. Copy of the participant’s (participants’, if duet) passport.

10.6. High-resolution photo in ballet costume (for the brochure), passport photo of the participant and his/her teacher.

10.7. Video recording for Round 1.

10.8. Musical accompaniment (wav formatting).


11. Financial conditions

11.1. Participation fee (for soloists – EUR 70; for duets – EUR 100) is to be paid to the account of the Latvian Ballet and Dance Guild by June 18, 2018. All the transaction and commission fees are to be covered by the participant. The management of the IV International Baltic Ballet Competition does not approve the application of those participants who have failed to provide the documentation confirming the payment of the participation fee.

11.2. Participation fee is unrefundable.

11.3. The following bank details should be used for transferring the participation fee:

11.4. The participants of the Competition are responsible for their own travel, accommodation, and board expenses for the duration of the Competition.

11.5. All participants are responsible for their own health and life insurance.

11.6. All prizes are to be paid out on June 20, 2018. Laureates declining their participation at the Gala Concert lose their rights to receive the prize.

12. Organization

12.1. The Competition is organized by the Latvian Ballet and Dance Guild and the Riga Choreography School. For the duration of the Competition the Front Desk of the Competition will be established, providing the competitors with answers to any questions related to the Competition, including, but not limited to, formal announcements, rehearsal schedule, results, etc. All the announcements will be available at the premises of the Riga Choreography School, the Daile Theatre, as well as at the recommended hotels.

12.2. All participants are to schedule their arrival in Riga so that the registration can be

completed by 18:00 o’clock on June 18, 2018. The registration will take place at the

Secretariat of the Riga Choreography School (112 Kalnciema Street, Riga). The

participants who have failed to registered before 11 00 June 18, 2018, and have not

reached an agreement with the Organizers, can be disqualified from the

Competition.

12.3. At the time of the registration the participant completes the Registration Form and submits a CD, where each recording is organized in a separate CD for each of the performances, clearly labeled with the first name and last name of the participant.

12.4. Taking into consideration the itinerary of the Competition as well as for the purposes of more convenient local transportation as well as exchange of information, the Organizers recommend the following partner hotels with discount rates: The list of the hotels is to be announced.

12.5. The hotel booking is available by contacting the Organizers at: . Please, specify the number of persons, the number and type of rooms, as well as the dates of arrival and departure. The hotel reservation is to be completed ASAP, but no later than May 15, 2018.

12.6. The amount of rooms for the discount rate is limited and a subject to availability. The Organizer does not guarantee the room availability.

12.7. The participants who have made the hotel reservation will receive the confirmation.

12.8. Participants who have not received the confirmation are responsible for

arranging their own accommodation for the duration of the Competition.

13. Transportation

13.1. All participants are responsible for their travel to/from Riga.

13.2. The Organizers can assist the participants, the accompanying persons, and teachers with the local transportation from Riga International Airport, Riga Railway station or Coach Terminal, if the competitor provide the Organizers (by email at ) with the following information before June 1, 2018:

·  The exact date and time of the arrival

·  Number of persons travelling

·  The place of arrival (for picking up)

·  The place of accommodation (for dropping off)

13.3. The participants who have failed to contact the Organizers before June 1, 2018, as regards the local transportation are responsible for arraigning their own transportation.

14. Confirmation and Correspondence

14.1. By signing the Application Form (Annex No.1), the competitors confirm that they agree to all the rules and regulations of the Competition, and undertake to comply with them and remain in touch with the Organizers of the Competition.

14.2. The Organizers undertake to inform the candidate regarding their participation by

May 15, 2018.

15. General Questions

15.1. The Organizers of the IV International Baltic Ballet Competition hold all the rights to record and take photos of all the programs of the Competition. The video and photo materials can be used in any kind of PR or advertisement campaigns, online broadcasts or TV.

15.2. The competitors can not receive remuneration for the above activities and can not claim copyrights for any photo or video recordings.

15.3. Taking pictures and recording the competitors during the performances of the

Competition can be done only with the permission from the Organizers.

Use of any form of logo of the Competition, whether online or in production, is

allowed solely with the written consent of the Organizers and is a subject to a

certain fee.

15.4. All matters related to the copyrights, musical accompaniment, or choreography are to be solved by the competitor him- / herself. The Organizer is in no way responsible for the unredeemed copyrights.

15.6. In case of any ambiguities arising from the translation of this document, preference is given to the original document in Latvian.
