Title / Identify and forecast future capability requirements and demands on telecommunication networks
Level / 7 / Credits / 6
Purpose / This unit standard is for people who currently are, or will be, identifying and forecasting future requirements and demands on telecommunications networks.
People assessed as competent in this unit standard are able to identify customer requirements; anticipate technology upgrades; and project capability demands on networks.
Classification / Telecommunications > Telecommunications - Service Delivery
Available grade / Achieved
Prerequisites / Bachelor of Engineering or Diploma of Statistics, or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.

Guidance Information

1Underpinning knowledge and skills may be provided by internal courses specialising in network forecasting and componentry.

2General Range

Networks: multi access, transmission systems, switch, other traffic bearing systems.

Outcomes and performance criteria

Outcome 1

Identify future requirements and demands on networks.

Performance criteria

1.1Current demand on networks is identified, is relevant and cost-effective, and considers historical, local, and international data by product and service.

Rangedata – life cycles, trends.

1.2Identified current demand considers spatial relationships of time, size, space, and direction of traffic including origin and destination.

1.3Future customer requirements and demands on networks are identified, documented, are complete and accurate, and determine the cross impacts of competitive services, technologies, and networks.

1.4Relationships between customer network behaviour and customer demographics are identified and are current and complete.

Rangecustomer network behaviour – call types, numbers, services required, equipment required.

1.5Relationships between customer network behaviour and network utilisation are identified and are accurate and complete.

Rangenetwork utilisation – line cards, processes, cable pair, transmission band width, switches.

1.6Various methodologies are used to identify current demands on network.

Rangestatistical sampling, surveys.

1.7Records of historical customer demand are accurate and complete, stored in a central location, and are available to authorised users.

1.8Notification of work in progress and completion of work is received by interested parties in the agreed format promptly.

Rangemarketing, operations, finance, management.

Outcome 2

Forecast future capability requirements and demands on networks.

Performance criteria

2.1Forecasts of future capability requirements and demands on networks are statistically valid, accurate, reliable, and supported by evidence and reasoned argument.

2.2Forecasts of future capability requirements and demands on networks are complete, relevant, and agreed between interested authorised parties.

Rangeinterested authorised parties – management, colleagues, planners, specialists or other personnel required and authorised to have access to the information.

2.3Forecasts are documented, include specifications of network performance, are stored in a central location, and are available to authorised users.

2.4Resolution level meets customer requirements and documentation is understood by anticipated readers.

2.5Forecast of future capability requirements and demands on networks complies with network, service, and customer standards.
