August 5, 2016

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! I hope everyone has enjoyed the summer. I’m very excited that soon our school halls will be filled with smiling students. The students’ first day will be Wednesday, August 17th. There will be an open house/orientation on Monday, August 15th from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. This is a great opportunity for students and parents/guardians to meet the teachers and tour the building. The school hours remain the same as last year. The tardy bell will ring at 7:45 AM. Students being dropped off at school may be dropped off as early as 7:00 AM. The drop off location is in the back of the building and students will proceed to the cafeteria. The drop off location gets very busy beginning at 7:25 AM. In order to avoid being tardy, I would encourage an earlier drop off time. Bus riders enter the building at 7:35 AM. The end of the day dismissal bells will ring at 2:17 PM for pick-ups. The pick-up area is in the back of the building. Bus riders will be dismissed at 2:20 PM and walkers will be dismissed as soon as the buses leave the property (approximately 2:30 PM).

Since school shopping will take place soon, I wanted to include information about school supplies and also include the dress code. The school supply lists can be found on the website. Go to www.wb.k12.oh.us and click on Mt. Orab Middle School. Scroll to the bottom of the page and supply lists are there by team. Supply lists can also be picked up in the middle school office Monday-Friday between the hours of 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Below is the dress code taken directly from the 2016-2017 student handbook. Please use this as a guide for school shopping.

DRESS CODE FOR STUDENTS

The purpose of the Western Brown dress code is to instill an acceptable standard of appearance for the educational environment. Extremes of any nature that detract from the educational process will not be permitted. In the final analysis, the building administration has the duty to interpret that, which negates a reasonable standard of appearance.

1.  Shoes must be worn at all times.

2.  Lower garments are to be worn at an appropriate level not dragging the floor. The lower garments may NOT allow any portion of the buttocks or undergarments to be exposed when the student stands, sits, raises his/her hand(s) or bends over. Leggings (yoga) pants may be worn when covered between the waist and mid-thigh. Sleepwear is also prohibited (pajama pants).

3.  Pants, shorts, skirts, dresses, or skorts, may have no holes revealing skin and must extend to mid-thigh.

4.  Shirts and tops must have a high enough neckline to cover ALL cleavage and must be long enough to show NO skin between the upper and the lower garment. Shirts/Dresses must have a sleeve. Examples of inappropriate apparel include but are not limited to, halters, midriff tops, crop tops, spaghetti straps, strapless tops, revealing/see-through tops, open mesh garments, tank tops, or muscle shirts or any top with over-sized arm holes.

5.  No clothing, jewelry, drawings, tattoos, or imprints with reference to violence, alcohol, drugs or drug paraphernalia, tobacco or tobacco products, improper innuendoes, gangs, obscenities, profanity, or lewd, symbols (Confederate flag) may be worn or exhibited.

6.  Exposed chains, jewelry, dog collars, spiked clothing or jewelry may not be worn.

7.  No piercings other than ear piercings or nose stud will be permitted including those covered with Band-Aids, etc. Due to safety, ear gauges are not to exceed the size of a dime.

8.  No hats, head coverings, hoods of clothing, bandannas, sweatbands or sunglasses, are to be worn in the building.

9.  Any hairstyle that creates a distraction to the school environment is not permitted.

Keeping students safe is a priority at Western Brown. This fall, staff and students will be participating in ALICE (an acronym for alert, lockdown, inform, counter, and evacuate) training. This training prepares the staff and students for an active shooter situation. For any parent wishing to attend, there will be an informational meeting regarding this training the night of the district’s open house. The meeting will be held on Monday, August 15, 2016 at 7:00 PM in the Western Brown High School auditeria.

I hope the information in this letter is helpful. Feel free to contact me with questions or comments. I can be reached at 937-444-2529. Please enjoy the rest of the summer with your children and let your children know I am looking forward to August 17th.

Thanks for all you do to support your children.

Sincerely,

Sabrina Armstrong, Principal
