Math 8 Syllabus

Expectations

FOLLOW ALL SCHOOL RULES!

Be prepared for class everyday! Textbook, notebook, homework, pencil, calculator, and student agenda are needed everyday.

Participate in class! Notes are to be taken each day carefully and completely. Make sure you ask questions and answer questions when called upon.

Be respectful! Listen when the teacher or other students are talking. Do not speak when others are talking. Always refer to others in a respectful manner.

Textbooks should be covered at all times.

If at any time a student fails to understand the work being covered, it is their responsibility to seek extra help. Extra help will be provided during F.I.R.E period. Before and after school help can also be arranged.

Supplies

A scientific calculator is required!

A loose-leaf folder with pockets, kept separate from all other classes, is required. This folder will be used to keep worksheets, important handouts, quizzes, tests, this syllabus, and any other handouts. Nothing is to be thrown away from this course.

Pencil: Pencil is to be used on all assignments and assessments. There will be certain times when students will be instructed to use a pen to grade or correct assignments. Otherwise, Always Use A Pencil. (Make sure both a pencil and a pen are brought to class!)

Homework

Homework is a vital part of any math class. Students learn math by doing sample problems, not by merely watching the teacher.

Most homework assignments will be graded with completion points. Wrong answers will not count against students as long as effort to complete the assignment has been made.

5 points = Every problem assigned is completed and ALL work is shown.

2 points = More than half of the problems assigned are completed and

ALL work is shown.

0 points = The homework is not completed, less than half of the problems

assigned are completed, or there is no work shown.

SAMS no-zero/retake policy supports student-learning and mastery by eliminating zeros on work and grades. Students will be able to complete and turn in assignments up to the end of the chapter or unit of study. The students will receive full credit for each assignment turned in within this time period. Missing assignments will not receive any credit. The privilege of a student turning in late assignments for full credit may be revoked for habitual missing homework.

Students can also earn homework passes. Homework passes might come with A’s on tests, completing every assignment throughout a chapter, winning a review game, and more. Be prepared for every opportunity. Every homework pass that is not used will be worth 5 points towards the 2nd or 4th quarter grades.

ALEKS Program

Throughout the course of this year, each student will be required to complete an 8th

grade program on their own personal ALEKS accounts. This will be a lengthy process and students will be given certain deadlines. Some class time will be given to work on the programs, but the majority will have to be completed outside of class. Therefore, students must have access to the internet in order to complete these assignments. If this is not possible, please speak with Ms. Hartman as soon as possible to arrange time for school computers to be used.

Absenteeism

Attendance is very important. If students are absent from class, it is their responsibility to get all the materials missed. Make sure to copy the notes missed from a friend or Ms. Hartman‘s notebook so that all notes are present for notebook quizzes.

With an excused absence, students will be allowed the amount of excused time for making up assigned work. For example, if a student is absent for one day, they will have one day to make up the missed work. In addition, it is important not to fall behind on current work.

homepage. Click on South Amherst Middle School, then teacher pages, then Ms.

Hartman. Here you can find weekly lesson plans, homework for the week, a link to our online textbook, and more. Please use this webpage as a resource as needed.

Grades

Student’s grade in this class will be based on homework assignments, quizzes, tests, class participation, and any other assignments that are necessary. NO ROUNDING….an 89.9% will remain a B.

Work will be evaluated and graded as follows

A = 90% - 100%

B = 80% - 89%

C = 70% - 79%

D = 60% - 69%

Discipline Procedures

Any Misconduct

1) First Offense: verbal warning

2) Second Offense: documentation

3) Third Offense: documentation and lunch detention

4) Fourth Offense: documentation, parent phone call, after school detention

5) Fifth Offense: parent meeting

6) Sixth Offense: Office Referral

Depending on the infraction, students can automatically advance to higher steps in discipline.
