PFC MEETING MINUTES

September 14, 2016

*Meeting was called to order @ 9:10 a.m.

Presidents’ Report: Laura & Antasha initiated introductions and welcomed 6th grade parents.

*This month’s Superintendent’s Discussion Council meeting was more of a meet and greet but some issues were discussed. LVUSD has a total of 11,500 students in 16 schools this year. LCAP (Local Control & Accountability Plan) goals were reviewed; more info can be found at or by contacting Karen Kimmel, Asst. Superintendent of Business @ .

*PFC is looking into a possible purchase of 2 huge ceiling fans for the AEW Gym; currently researching possible funding (DO; AEW etc).

*Spartan pins have been purchased and will be used as “Good Citizen” pins that students can collect and wear at graduation.

*Campus Beautification efforts include purchasing outdoor tables for the language arts dept., renovating the library to include bistro table and courtyard meeting areas (already hugely successful), renovating planters, purchasing trees to replace dead ones and purchasing high-end artificial turf for 2 key areas in the front of the building. Work orders have also been filed for various school repairs.

*Jenna Markey was introduced as AEW Green Team chair. Thank you, Jenna!

*Kick off date for the newly revamped magazine drive is September 30; more info to come.

*Mina Rah will chair this year’s book fair which will take place March 21-24. Thank you, Mina!

Principal’s Report:Mr Miles reported that the state has passed new history standards which focus more on studying interactions between people.

*Next Generation science standards are also being implemented; there is a push toward integrating engineering into all grades.

*AEW has a new website that Elias Miles and Wendy Merrill worked on this summer. Please visit to access. ALL PARENTS SHOULD STAY INFORMED BY FAMILIARIZING THEMSELVES WITH THIS WEBSITE.

*AEW has a new counselor this year; Kelly Lowry moved from CHS and will be able to focus on more pertinent wellness issues; providing support for students experiencing grief, ramifications from divorce or addiction.

*Last week AEW hosted “Dude Be Nice” week which encourages social emotional wellness. The school surprised local first responders with a huge “thank you” event. Many firefighters and police officers were visibly moved. The event was covered in The Acorn newspaper. Please visit for more info.

*Spartan Citizenship pins were viewed by all present.

PE Department Chair Report: Dana Dickson reviewed PE standards and expectations. Units rotate throughout the 3 years; no unit is repeated. Tuesday is cardio day; students are timed on their mile every 5th week. Thursday is fitness day and students are able to use the Hear Lab workout room which is equipped with various machines and resistance bands. Students also write and reflect on various topics and view an anti-bullying DVD. Short term medical leave (up to 5 days) from physical activities needs to be accompanied by a parent note outlining what the student cannot participate in. Long term medical leave (more than 5 days) needs to be accompanied by a doctor’s note. TENNIS BALLS AND RAQUET BALL RACKETS ARE NEEDED. A nice running track is also on the PE wish list.

Traffic and Safety Report:Maralyn Gold reported that construction on LV Rd. is behind schedule with no end date at this point. She will look into the backup caused by Muse School traffic signs. Drought resistant plants are being installed in front of the school and in median strips.

*New city shuttle buses are in use and already packed. Nine buses are at the biggest ridership in city history. The city is purchasing 2 new 30 passenger buses.

*There is NO SMOKING on school property; parents need to adhere to this policy even while in vehicles. There is also NO CELL PHONE USE while dropping off or picking up students. PARENTS NEED TO DROP OFF THEIR CHILD AND GO: TRAFFIC JAMS ARE BEING CAUSED BY PARENTS SITTING IN LINE AND TEXTING.

New Business: City Council members Alicia Weintraub and David Shapiro will be featured guest at our next PFC meeting on October 19.
