4-H Summer Fun is an educational program of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Edgecombe County 4-H Program. The program will run throughout the summer with educational and fun opportunities for all youth ages 6-18. Activities are open to ages specific to the age appropriateness of the activities. NOTE: Youth must be 6 to 18 years of age as of January 1, 2014 and you DO NOT have to be in 4-H to participate.

EARLY REGISTRATION: 4-H Club members have the opportunity to register on Wednesday, May 14th 3pm-6pm at the 4-H office, and the public is invited to register on Thursday, May 15th 8am-5pm. At time of registration you will need to complete the 4-H summer registration form, 4-H medical release form, 4-H enrollment form and the 4-H code of conduct form. Please bring all required health insurance information and check made payable to : Edgecombe County 4-H. There will be a Notary on site to notarize the forms. We will need forms from each participant. Registration will be on first-come, first-serve basis, with payment of activities and programs.

Note: There must be a minimum of 5 particpants for each class in order to hold the event. A refund will be given if the event does not occur.

4-H Summer Camp

Date: June 15th – 20th Location: Eastern 4-H Center on Bulls Bay

Experience camp life and all the fun activities involved with summer camp such as smores, hiking, swimming, canoeing, high and low ropes course, archery, crafts and most of all making new friends.

Chicken Chat

Cost: $5.00 Ages: 5-18

Join in the fun by raising your own chickens. You will be given three chicks to raise throughout the summer and early fall. Make sure you practice up on your showmanship skill as we will host a chicken show in October during National 4-H week. You will bring your favorite chicken to the show.

Rabbit Show

Cost: $25.00 Ages: 5-18

Have you ever wanted to hold a rabbit? Well here is your chance. Enjoy raising a rabbit throughout the summer and early fall and during National 4-H Week in October you will get the chance to show your rabbit and share with others what you have learned.

My Very Own Garden

Cost: $5.00 Ages: 5-18

Put your gardening knowledge to the test by designing and planting your own garden. This will be a fun project for you for the summer. You can design any type of garden. Some ideas would be a pizza garden, fairy garden, herb garden, and flower garden. We will supply you with some plants for your garden and they will be available for pick up at the end of May. You can add as many additonal plants to your garden as you would like. The gardens will be judged in September and the winners of the garden contest will be announced during National 4-H Week in October. Categories will be cloverbud (5-8 year olds), juniors (9-13 year olds), and seniors (14-18 year olds). Let us see your creativity. A project book will be provided to the youth at time of plant pick up.

Cloverbud Tea Party

Date: Tuesday, June 24th Time: 9:00am-3:00pm Camp Limit: 15

Location: Edgecombe 4-H Office Cost: $10.00 Age: 6 – 8

Learn to make delicious treats perfect for a tea party! Enjoy homemade lemon meringue cookies, finger sandwiches, and of course tea. Dress up for the special occasion! There will be lots of fun recipes to make and try in this class.

WRAL TV-5 Tour and Pullen Park Fun

Date: Wednesday, June 25th Time: 8:00am – 3:30pm

Location: Meet at Edgecombe 4-H Office at 8:00am

Cost: $10.00 plus amusement ride and lunch money or bring a bag lunch. Ages: 9 -15 Camp Limit: 11

Don’t just watch the news on television come see how it is produced. This tour will teach you all about the different careers in broadcasting. How would you like to watch TV for a career? This tour will share with you all the daily tasks that go into getting your favorite TV shows to your home. After we tour WRAL we will visit Pullen Park. This is North Carolina’s oldest public park and the the 5th oldest operating amusement park in the United States and the 16th oldest in the world. Here you will have lunch and we will take in some amusement rides such as the carousel, train and paddle boats. You will need to bring money for tickets for the amusement rides and they are $1.00 a piece. Most rides require 1 ticket per person except for the paddle boats they require 6. Also you will need money for lunch at the park or bring your own bagged lunch.

USS North Carolina Battleship and Fort Fisher

Date: Thursday, June 26th Time: 6:45am – 5:30pm

Location: Leave Edgecombe Extension office at 6:45am to travel to Wilmington. Cost: $15.00 plus lunch money Ages: 9 & Up Camp Limit: 11

Come learn a little about NC history as we tour the USS North Carolina Battleship and the beautiful waterfront city of Wilmington, NC. We will also visit Fort Fisher and see how it was used to help guard the coast of NC.

Aurora Fossil Dig & Ferry Ride

Date: Friday, June 27th Time: 8:00 am -4:00pm

Location: Meet at Edgecombe 4-H office and travel to Aurora

Cost: $10 & spending money Ages: 9-14 Camp Limit: 11

Bring a bagged lunch!

This is a great opportunity to get your hands dirty in the “dig” of a lifetime…sharks teeth and other interesting fossils. You will also tour the fossil museum. We will have a picnic lunch and ride the ferry after.

Cloverbud 4-H Summer Camp Week

Date: Tuesday, July 8th – Friday, July 11th Time: 9:00am – 3:00 pm

Location: Edgecombe County 4-H Office

Cost: $100 Ages: 6-8 Camp Limit: 15

Calling all cloverbud campers! Come experience camp life and see what you have to look forward to in the future. You will learn kitchen safety and nutrition while learning to prepare a complete meal. You will learn gardening skills as you make a take home butterfly garden. You will get to learn about worms as we take a look at vermiculture. We will finish off the week with a fun day of crafts, pizza, and movies. Your crafts will be entered in the 4-H crafts display at the NC State Fair in October.

Cake Decorating 101

Date: Thursday, July 17th Time: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Location: Edgecombe 4-H Extension Lab

Cost: $25 Ages: 9 - 18 Camp Limit: 15

Bring a bagged lunch and snacks

Come and experience the art of cake decorating. You will learn the basic techniques to decorate your own cakes. Each participant will decorate their own cake to take home and share with their family and friends. You will leave with your own cake decorating supplies.

Tech Xcite Engineering Camp

Date: Friday, July 18th Time: 9:00am – 3:00pm

Location: Edgecombe 4-H Extension Lab

Cost: $10 Ages: 9-18 Camp Limit: 15

Bring a bagged lunch and snacks

This camp will teach you all about what it takes to be an engineer. You will be engineers for the day as you build a solar car, bionic arm and a rainwater filter system. This is a challenging camp that will keep you thinking. You will be challenged with coming up with your own designs. You will work in teams and learn about the importance of teamwork.

It’s A Duck Dynasty

Date: Tuesday, July 22nd Time: 9:00am – 3:00pm

Location: Edgecombe County 4-H Office

Cost: $10 includes lunch and snacks

Ages: 9 – 18 Camp Limit: 15

Bring four rolls of your favorite duct tape!

Start your own duck dynasty with duct tape crafts and games. This camp will teach you how to make duct tape pocket books, wallets, and much more. You will play teambuilding games that revolve around duct tape.

Sylvan Heights Bird Park

Date: Wednesday, July 23rd Time: 8:00am – 3:00pm

Location: Meet at Edgecombe County 4-H Office

Cost: $15 and lunch money Ages: 9 -14 Camp Limit: 11

Supplies needed: tennis shoes, hat and sunscreen

Roam this 18-acre facility with over 200 ducks, geese, swans, and exotic birds living in their outdoor natural habitat. You are sure to hear the call of the wild! The group will stop for lunch at Hardees.

Rip Roarin’ Rain Forest

Date: Thursday, July 24th Time: 9:00am – 3:00pm

Location: Edgecombe County 4-H Office

Cost: $10 Ages: 6 – 8 Camp Limit: 15

Have you thought it would be fun to visit a rain forest? Although we do not have a real rain forest in Edgecombe County we will pretend to have one for the day. Come learn all about rain forest through art, cooking, and animals.

Culinary Academy

Date: Friday, July 25th Time: 9:00am – 3:00pm

Location: Edgecombe 4-H Office

Cost: $10 Ages: 9 – 18 Camp Limit: 15

Bring a bagged lunch!

Culinary academy will teach you how to prepare a meal from start to finish. You will learn the importance of planning meals, kitchen safety, food safety, and proper cooking techniques. You will prepare a full course meal including dessert and beverage.

Dolphin Tour

Date: Tuesday, July 29th Time: 8:00am-5:00pm

Location: Meet at the Edgecombe 4-H Office at 8:00am

Cost: $30.00 plus snack money. Bring a bag lunch.

Ages: 10 – 18 Camp Limit: 11

Join us on a unique eco-tour to search for wild Atlantic bottlenose dolphins and view the wildlife of the Outer Banks. We will board a 40 foot covered pontoon boat and observe bottlenose dolphins, pelicans, and osprey. Trained on-board naturalist will provide a fascinating commentary on the history of the Outer Banks and describe the life history and behavior of bottlenose dolphins. We will learn all about the migratory patterns, social behaviour, and how to identify them.

AG Safety Day Camp

Date: Wednesday, July 30th Time: 9:00am-2:00pm

Location: : East Carolina Agriculture & Education Center

Livestock Arena-1175 Kingsboro Rd. Rocky Mount, NC

Cost: $5.00 includes lunch

Ages: 6 and up

Supplies: All participants must complete a release and consent form. Register through Edgecombe 4-H Office.

A fun-filled day of learning for children K-5th grade. Topics for demonstration and discussion may include: ATV Safety, Tractor/PTO Safety, Fire Safety, First Aid, Healthy Lifestyles, Chemical Safety, Animal Safety, Hidden Hazards, Electrical Safety, and Sun Safety. This safety day includes lunch, take home goody bag and, a t-shirt for participants.

Christmas In July Craft Day

Date: Thursday, July 31st Time: 9am-3pm

Location: Edgecombe 4-H Office

Cost: $15.00

Ages: 9 and Up Camp Limit: 15

Bring your lunch

Get an early start on your Christmas shopping by participating in the 4-H Christmas in July Craft Day. You will make a variety of crafts. Some crafts are gourd birdhouses and mesh wreaths. Each particpant will select one craft to enter into the 4-H Craft Exhibit at the NC State Fair.

Fabulous Friday

Date: Friday, August 1st Time: 9:00am-3:00pm

Location: Edgecombe 4-H Office

Cost: $10.00

Ages: 9 and Up Camp Limit: 10

Bring Lunch Money and shopping money

Spend the day at the coolest place in town while getting some much needed physical activity. Ice Skating is a wonderful way to exercise. Come skate with us at Bladez on Ice in Greenville. After skating we will have lunch at the mall and learn about smart shopping. This is a great way to get some last minute back to school shopping done.

Maple View Dairy Farm Tour

Date: Tuesday, August 5th Time: 7:30am-5:00pm Ages: 9-14

Location: Edgecombe 4-H Office Leave promptly at 7:45am to head to dairy farm.

Cost: $15.00 plus spending money for ice cream at country store

Bring a bagged lunch

Maple View Dairy Farm is a working farm in Hillsborough, NC that serves as an educational farm. We will tour the dairy farm, participate in a dairy learning lab and a plant science learning lab, visit the barnyard, and have a hayride. We will have a picnic lunch on the farm. You will need to bring a bagged lunch. After the tour and lunch we will visit the Maple View Country Store where you will have the opportunity to purchase some ice cream. You will need to bring money for the ice cream.
