You can't visit Hawaii, or the island of Oahu specifically, without at least checking out the surf. Home to Sunset Beach, Haleiwa's Alii Beach Park and the Banzai Pipeline, surfers travel from all around the globe to test their chops on the island's infamous waves. While these waves might be a little large during the winter months for the untrained surfer, it's prime time for major surfing competitions and you can expect to see some of the world's best out catching building-sized waves.Whether you try your hand at them or not, you'll see Mother Nature working at her finest.

Oahu boasts plenty of delicious restaurants in the big cities such as Honolulu, but if you're going to visit Hawaii, you have to sample some dishes that are 100 percent Hawaiian cuisine. A delectable place to check out is Helena's Hawaiian Food, located in Kalihi, a neighbourhood right outside downtown Honolulu. With a line outside the door by 10 a.m., this 11-table restaurant features entrees such as kalua pig, fried butterfish collars and luau squid. Then there's what they're famous for - their pipi kaula short ribs, which are marinated overnight, smoked and dried for half a day before being cooked.

If you want to dive into something unique to Hawaii, drive out to the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve for a snorkelling excursion. Once a volcanic crater, Hanauma Bay was likely flooded by wave erosion and is now an important nature preserve and Oahu's most popular snorkelling destination. Swimming in the crystal blue waters, you'll see reefs full of colourful fish, turtles and much more.

Roughly 13 miles long and 2,750 feet deep, Waimea Canyon is, simply put, raw natural beauty. With incredible hues of red, green, brown, and orange plastering the sides of the cliffs, there are few things comparable to Waimea's beauty. Whatever you do, when you plan your trip to the Grand Canyon, ensure it's a clear day so the clouds do not obstruct your views.
