Mumbai: November 11, 2014: National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) today successfully conducted the “3rd India Australia Skills Conference: Skills for Better Business” today at Taj Lands End in Mumbai. This conference is an initiative of the Australia India Education Council. The sessions during the day witnessed an update on cooperation between the respective Australian and Indian Industry skill councils.

The conference also witnessed the MoU signing between National Skill Development Corporation, India (NSDC) and TAFE Directors Australia (TDA), on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) cooperation, in order to contribute positively to the development of Technical and Vocational Education and Training related linkages between India and Australia. Shri Bandaru Dattatreya, the Honourable Minister for Labour & Employment was present for the MoU signing.

The purpose of this MOU is to further strengthen cooperation between the two partners to enhance and extend bilateral cooperation between the Australian and India. The MOU will promote common interests and benefits to both organisations.

India Australia engagement on skills development started around three years back. The project has made rapid progress in the past few months and everyone is excited about the Nov 11th event in Mumbai. The event will have the presence of the Australian delegation led by Industry Minister Mr. Ian McFarlane.

During the visit of Indian delegation to Australia in July 2014, five sectors identified and one or more critical job roles were taken up for developing Indo Australian Trans National Standards. These job roles are facing shortage of skilled manpower in Australia. Indian candidates when trained and certified to these Trans National Standards would be available to cover the skills shortage in Australia.

Speaking at the event Mr. Ian McFarlane, Minister for Industry, Australia said, “The work that both India and Australia industry skill councils have done in the last 6 months has been extremely remarkable and insightful for both countries. We have seen an exchange of mutually beneficial standards in the skills landscape which are bound to build strong resources for both the countries.”

Commenting on the successful partnership between India and Australia till now, Dilip Chenoy, MD & CEO, NSDC said, “In the short period of just over three months, our Indian Automotive, IT, Telecom, Retail and Healthcare sectors in collaboration with their Australian counterparts, have already completed preliminary mapping of Standards. We are happy to see the progress made so far. A final draft of completely mapped standards with resultant identified gaps would be available by end of December 2014”.

Simultaneously, work will begin on mapping the Assessment Process that would lead to certification. Similarly, the dialogue started in July’14 about immigration norms would be carried forward towards developing operational details.

The event highlighted how the Indian Standards created by the Sector Skills Councils map with various standards developed in Australia for the same job roles. This mapping not only benchmarks Indian Standards with Australian standards but also proves how India Standards are compliant with those used globally to address challenges of trained manpower across the world.

It is expected that by Mar 15, a complete process would be ready for Training, Assessment and Certification of candidates. Steps have also been initiated for collaborative efforts between Indian and Australian Training Providers in order to offer high quality Training delivery and Train the Trainer modules. Subsequently, Indian aspirants would be able to get trained, assessed and certified to these Trans National Standards .Successful candidates would then be available to take up employment in Australia or other territoriessuch as the Middle East where Australian standards are accepted.

NSDC, in the conference, also announced its partnership with Heraud Training & Education (India) Private Limited where NSDC has approved funding for a project where the organization will train and certify 83,304 students over next ten years in Automotive, Healthcare, Telecom, Retail and construction sectors.
