Purpose / People credited with this unit standard are able to: select the required materials for making a batch of adhesive; make up a batch of adhesive according to the recipe selected and following workplace practices; demonstrate knowledge of the process for mixing adhesives; and follow safety requirements for the equipment being operated in accordance with workplace practices.

Explanatory notes

1All workplace practices must meet any applicable and recognised codes of practice, and documented workplace health, safety, and environmental procedures for personal, product, workplace health, safety, and environmental matters, and the obligations required under current law including the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996, Resource Management Act 1991, Privacy Act 1993 and their subsequent amendments.

2Workplace practices refer to the documented procedures for the equipment and/or workplace.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Select the required materials for making a batch of adhesive.

Evidence requirements

1.1The recipe selected for adhesive preparation meets the requirements of the job specifications.

1.2Availability of materials is confirmed against the recipe before mixing is commenced.

Outcome 2

Make up a batch of adhesive according to the recipe selected and following workplace practices.

Evidence requirements

2.1A batch of adhesive is made up to meet the job requirements.

Rangesequence as per recipe, quantities + 1.5%, temperatures.

2.2Quality checks are carried out and recorded.

Rangemay include but is not limited to checks for – viscosity, gel point, tackiness, temperature.

2.3Corrective actions are immediately undertaken where checks indicate conditions are outside the tolerance limits as specified in the recipe.

2.4Adhesive of usable quality is delivered to the corrugator tanks.

Outcome 3

Demonstrate knowledge of the process for mixing adhesives.

Evidence requirements

3.1The effects on board manufacture of using incorrect quantities of water and materials are explained.

3.2The effects on adhesive condition of not following the recipe sequence as specified are explained.

3.3The effects on board manufacture of adhesive conditions outside tolerance limits are explained.

3.4Actions to be taken when checks show adhesive conditions are outside tolerance limits are explained in terms of workplace practices.

Outcome 4

Follow safety requirements for the equipment being operated in accordance with workplace practices.

Evidence requirements

4.1Equipment start up, shutdown, and emergency procedures in the workplace are explained.

4.2Hazards identified by the company are described, and procedures established for dealing with these are followed.

4.3Potential hazards for the equipment being operated are identified and reported in accordance with workplace practices.
