Purpose / This unit standard is for people working in top making or semi-worsted processing. People credited with this unit standard are able to: explain the reasons for carrying out tests on sliver and top; follow the test methods to carry out tests; and be able to interpret and report the results.

Explanatory notes

1Underpinning knowledge and skills will include the ability to use a calculator.

2Competence in testing will be demonstrated for regain, fatty matter, extractable matter, silver weight and fibre length.

3Plant safety practices comply with Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 and workplace procedures.

4Workplace productivity and quality requirements will be met.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of tests and reasons for testing sliver and top.

Rangeregain, fatty matter, micron, vegetable content, nep count, fibre diagram, Uster evenness, silver weight.

Evidence requirements

1.1Sliver and top tests are described in terms of the principles, method and reason for each test.

Outcome 2

Take samples and perform sliver or top tests.

Rangeregain, fatty matter, extractable matter, silver weight and fibre length.

Evidence requirements

2.1Sample is selected, taken and held according to plant operating procedure and test method.

2.2Testing is carried out according to test method.

Rangeequipment assembled, equipment calibrated, test conditions established, results recorded.

Outcome 3

Analyse and report on test results.

Evidence requirements

3.1Test results are produced and recorded according to test method and workplace practice.

3.2Test results are assessed for conformance to product specification or work instructions.

3.3Deviations from plant standard are reported to designated plant staff according to plant procedure.

3.4Test records, results and reports are kept according to plant procedure.
