Job Scope: This job description in developed in line with the National Occupational Standards for Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools

Job Purpose:

  • To work with the Curriculum Manager as part of a professional team to support the teaching and learning of students with autism
  • To work under the guidance of the Curriculum Manager to implement an agreed student work programme.

School Development and Standards

  • To promote and actively support the values of the school
  • Support the vision, ethos and policies of the school
  • Support the Head Teacher in the promotion of the schools aims and objectives
  • Promote high levels of achievement throughout the school
  • Maintain the confidentiality of students, staff and Mackworth House School according to the Data Protection Act 1984.

Teaching and Learning

  • Contribute to the planning, evaluation and implementation of teaching and learning activities (STL24)
  • Support pupils learning activities, being aware of stages of development and individual needs (STL18)
  • Develop teaching and learning, knowledge and expertise to contribute to the delivery of specific curriculum areas (STL 2, STL28)
  • Contribute to assessment for learning (STL30)
  • Promote the transfer of learning from outdoor experiences (STL32)
  • Through effective teaching strategies support pupils with communication and interaction needs (STL39)
  • Establish, develop and maintain meaningful relationships with pupils setting high expectations (STL4)
  • Through effective strategies support pupils with cognition and learning needs (STL40)
  • Through effective strategies support pupils with sensory and/or physical needs (STL42)
  • Use information and communication technology to support pupils learning (STL8)
  • Contribute to maintaining pupil records (STL55)
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of IEP’s (STL2)
  • Promote independent learning (STL12)
  • Work with students on therapy or care programmes, designed and supervised by the therapist (STL14)

  • Support pupils on educational visits and out of school activities (STL59)
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with other practitioners (STL62)

Support for Students

  • Support children with autism and their families (STL38)
  • Use routine supervision and care to support pupils who have physical, sensory and emotional needs (STL12)
  • Contribute to the prevention and management of challenging behaviour in children and young people (STL37)
  • Work with children and young people with additional requirements to meet their personal support needs (STL44)
  • Help to keep children safe and deal with immediate problems or emergencies in accordance with the schools policies and procedures (STL3)
  • Develop and promote positive relationships between the children and others (STL20)
  • Liaise with parents, carers and families (STL60)
  • Deal with the day to day requirements of the pupils being supported (STL12)

Personal and Professional Development

  • Be an effective member of the school staff team (STL5)

Administrative Duties

  • Support the Curriculum Manager to prepare resources to support learning (STL24)
  • Monitor and maintain curriculum resources (STL56)
  • Work with the Curriculum Manager to ensure the learning environment, learning resources and materials are ready for use in activities whilst recognising and minimising potential hazards (STL31)
  • Contribute to writing and monitoring pupil plans, reviewing and implementing interventions and teaching strategies to enable pupils to understand and meet their targets (STL39, STL40, STL42 & STL55)
  • Undertake duties as required by the Headteacher

Teaching Assistants are required to work additional times as is required to enable them to discharge effectively their professional duties. At Mackworth House School the guide hours will be 8.00am to 4.00pm Monday to Friday
