Determining the preference ranking for Oreo, Froot Loops, and Crisco in aged laboratory rats.

Date: June 27, 2007

Researchers: R. Mackechnie, K. Govind, GR Davis

Oreo = 4.7 kcal/g, FL =3.9 kcal/g , Crisco = 9.3 kcal/g

Background:

In previous research several food selections have been used to study the food intake in laboratory rats. There are many reasons to choose different food types such as macronutrient content, mode of eating, etc. Froot Loops (FL), Crisco (CR), and Oreo cookies (OR) are more palatable than rat chow (RC); however, the rank of palatability of these foods is not known. FL are for the most part comprised of carbohydrates and CR is almost all fat. OR have a combination of the two macronutrients with the filling being comprised of primarily fats and the out two cookies mostly carbohydrates. Since these foods have been used in multiple studies it would be useful to know if laboratory rats prefer one selection to another since the results are compared. For instance in developing an animal model for binge eating it will be necessary to compare the results for a study using CR and a study using FL. If there is a difference in both the palatability as well as the macronutrient content it could be difficult to compare the data. Another difference among these foods is their energy densities.
