Prompt:

You are a guide for someone who has never been to our county fair. It is your job to give them information about what they will see, hear, taste, or experience. In 3 paragraphs, explain what their trip to the fair may be like.

(3 paras – intro, middle/body, conclu)

Avoid – opinion words that show what you think or how you feel – leave OUT words like thrilling , scariest, most delicious, tasty, best flavor, wonderful, fantastic – no, no, NOOOOOO on all of these for this type of writing. Just give the facts for now.

For your main idea in the body (middle) paragraph, pick three supporting details from the list OR what you know from going to our county fair. For each supporting detail, write a follow-up sentence that ‘tells me more’. If you think you’d forget the ‘tell me more’, then write a key word beside the supporting detail word to help you remember. I put samples in color and in italics beside a few supporting details.

Intro samples are at the bottom after my modeled paragraphs. On your flee map, you have to write key words out of the sample intro and create your own conclusion, BUT you may copy the sample or adjust it to 3 – 4 sentences that work for you.

-people ride or walk – candy , thrown out

Conclu (restate intro – new words to leave reader with a thought, feeling, or reflection) – firemen, band

What is an event that comes to our county every October that gets many children excited? It lasts a week long, and many from the county come out to participate. To start it off, Springfield hosts the parade. It begins on one end and goes all the way through town. It includes those who keep us safe like the policemen with sirens and those who entertain like dancers and the high school bands.

It does not take long before the floats begin coming. Businesses, churches, and school clubs are the main ones who put a float in the parade. You can tell a float by the way it is designed. Some people do it on the back of a truck while others do a trailer being pulled. One was like an army tank , so they decorated it like camouflage. It may have been the Boy Scouts. As people in the parade walk or ride, they throw candy. The children watching run out to get some, and they may even fight over it! The grown may not fight candy , but they sure might when the toilet or paper towels are thrown from Georgia pacific. While the floats are moving, you can hear music. That may be coming from speaker on a float or it could be live music. That would be the high school bands. Both high school bands come.

When the end of the parade comes, there may be a firetruck to close it. Or the band will play one of its well-rehearsed songs. No matter how it ends, the people of Effingham are ready to go to gates when it is over.

What makes people go to the fair year after year? The fair attracts people for many reasons. Many older people make crafts or do posters to earn 1st , second, or 3rd place ribbons. Some like to go for the ____ or the ____, but I want you to know more about the ____.

Sirens…bells… Whistles..all these can be heard when there is an emergency. It could be police or firetruck trying to get through to help someone.
