3-D Cell Model Instructions

Your project must have: A 3-D MODEL, An ANALOGY for each cell part, and a KEY to the cell parts.

  • MODEL- Make a 3 dimensional model of a cell) choose plant or animal). SHOW all parts listed (see below) and number all parts.
  • Use common materials such a Styrofoam, cardboard, wood, paper, play-dough, macaroni, dry cereal, string, buttons, pipe cleaners, beads, yarn, etc. Be creative, you don’t need to spend money to make a cell model.
  • Do not use JELLO, edible fruit or vegetables, or anything that will spoil or spill.
  • Number ALL parts.
  • Make sure parts and numbers are SECURELY attached to your model.
  • Cell model must be 3-D, it cannot be flat like a poster.
  • PUT YOUR NAME AND HOMEROOM ON MODEL!!
  • Identify your cell as plant or animal using a LABEL!!

  • ANALOGY: You must choose an overall theme for your analogies. For example, your theme can be school, house, mall, store, carnival, amusement park, movies etc. All analogies MUST relate directly to your theme.
  • Your analogies should be typed and located on the KEY paper (See KEY section for more details). You are to name each part (organelle), and then write the analogy next to the name of the organelle.
  • KEY: 8 ½ X 11 paper, TYPED, 3 columns
  • Column 1= the NUMBER of each part (organelle)
  • Column 2= the NAME of each part AND AN ANALOGY FOR EACH PART.
  • Column 3= a CONCISE statement of the FUNCTION of each part.
  • PUT YOUR NAME, DATE, AND HOMEROOM TEACHER’S NAME ON THE KEY!!
  • Label you key “Plant” or “Animal” cell.

***Important Vocabulary***

Concise= clear, complete, short description

Function= what the part DOES. Its purpose. (NOT a description of what it looks like)

3D= 3 dimensional= has length, width, and depth (NOT flat)
