Title:Nature versus Man-made

Start Date: 12thJuly

Deadline: September 2016

Introduction and purpose

In this first assignment you will be focusing on drawing techniques and a range of visual recording methods from primary sources. From this you will review and evaluate the outcomes.

Assignment Brief

A biology journal has commissioned an article that will be produced on a cd/dvd to accompany one of their monthly journals. The title of the article is Nature versus Man-made. You have the option to focus on either the effects of the constructed world on the natural world, or the similarities between human (the human figure/structure) versus man-made (industrial/mechanical) and botanical (flowers/plants/trees) versus animal (+insects/birds etc).

The focus on this assignment brief and unit is to explore media and ideas to develop an outcome.

Suggested artists – Van Gogh (paintings and drawings), Henry Moore (Graphic drawings), Cezanne (colour), Monet (Rouen Cathedral – light effects), Picasso (multiple viewpoints) Giaccometti (loose drawing), Hockney (iphone drawings), Gustav Klimt (pattern), Peter Randell (prints and sculptures), Antony Gormley (constructions), Georgia O Keefe (abstract), Andy Goldsworthy (Land Art), Alexander Calder (structures/mobiles), Hub cap art, Robert Klippel (restructure)

Starting point– select a variety of primary and secondary sources that fit with the nature v’s man made theme and begin to record your observations in a variety of media. P1 P2 M1

Task 1– Record objects from nature and the man-made environment using various media (pencil, pen, paint, ink, wax crayons, charcoal, pastel, photography, prints). Consider how you record texture, tone, form and surface detail. Use other materials to draw on (newspaper, fabric, card etc) P1,2 M1. Annotate and evaluate all experimentsP4.

Extension work – use wire/card/papiér mache/string/plastic to make a relief or 3D maquette M2 D1 (may take 3 to 4 lessons).

Homework: Continue with above. Also go to the town centre or local shops and record visually and in note form the effects, texture, atmosphere, colour, light, surface detail of buildings/structure (can be sketches/photos/rubbings) P1. Make notes as you do these. Think about viewpoints.

Task 2 – Look at a selection of artist’s work (list is above). Choose one artist (does not have to be from the list) and make a case study of their work. This should take the form of an overview of the artist, an account of the development of the work and an analysis of the visual recording in the work’s development. Make comparisons with your own work.
