Purpose / This unit standard is for people working in the horticulture industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to:demonstrate understanding of industry recommendations for environmental risk management; and implement and monitor horticultural process control measures to minimise negative environmental effects, in a horticulture production system.

2Definitions

Control measures are steps taken to minimise negative environmental effects.

Environmental risk is actual or potential threat of adverse effects arising out of an organisation’s activitieson living organisms and the environmentby factors such as effluents, emissions, wastes, and resource depletion.

Industry recommendations refer to industry accepted guidelines for managing the environment, for example:

A process is the flow of steps that are undertaken to produce a crop.

Regulatory requirements are local, national, or international requirements with legal status.

Understanding means that there should be evidence of a learner’s thorough comprehension of a topic. A learner with a good understanding of a topic should have applied, or should be able to apply what they have learnt to a workplace situation and will be able to alter their practices to the different contexts they are applying their learning to. Assessors should be confident that the learner’s understanding is embedded in their practices and behaviour.

Workplace procedures refer to verbal or written instructions to staff on procedures for implementing and monitoring sustainable horticulture production. Workplace procedures must comply with health and safety legislation and be consistent with the workplace health and safety plan.
