Purpose / This unit standard is for people working under close supervision in a horticulture context. People credited with this unit standard are able to train and prune young vines, report problems,and complete hand pruning operations.

Explanatory notes

1Evidence requirements must be consistent with:

  • Workplace procedures
  • Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.

2Workplace procedures refer to policies and procedures on safety, operation, and production set down by the employer or host organisation for training and pruning young vines.

3Pruning equipment may include – snips, tape guns, strings, stakes, wires, tape, secateurs, loppers, saw, orchard ladders and stools.

4Vines are woody or herbaceous plants whose stem is indeterminate, typically require support, and climb by tendrils, twining or creeping along the ground. Examples include – kiwifruit, grapes, tomatoes, cucumbers, capsicums.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Train and prune young vines, and report problemsunder close supervision.

RangeEvidence is required for training and pruning a minimum of 50 young vines.

Evidence requirements

1.1Check pruning equipment readiness for use.

1.2Train and prune young vinesas directed without damage to vines or equipment.

1.3Report problems with vines, structures, or equipment.

Outcome 2

Complete hand pruning operationsunder close supervision.

Evidence requirements

2.1Clean and store pruning equipment.

2.2Treat, dispose of, or recycleprunings.
