Purpose / This unit standard is for people working under close supervision in a horticulture context. People credited with this unit standard are able to control the canopy, and complete canopy maintenance activities.

Explanatory notes
1Evidence requirements must be consistent with:
- Workplace procedures
- Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.
2Workplace procedures refer to policies and procedures on safety, operation, and production set down by the employer or host organisation for canopy maintenance.
3Equipment may include – secateurs, knives, loppers, hand saw.
4Canopy maintenance also refers to summer pruning.

Outcome 1
Control the tree or vine canopy under close supervision.
Evidence requirements
1.1Check equipment readiness for use.
1.2Trim or remove unwanted growth and/or tips as directed,without damage to plants or equipment.
RangeExamples – leaf removal/plucking, shoot removal, positioning shoots, trimming shoots, bunch thinning, tipping.
1.3Positionshoots or branches.
1.4Report problems and/or anomalies with plants or structures.
Outcome 2
Complete canopy maintenance follow up activities under close supervision.
Evidence requirements
2.1Clean and storeequipment.
2.2Dispose of prunings.
