Purpose / People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate: knowledge of the receptionist role in terms of tikanga relating to manaaki manuhiri; demonstrate skills in te reo Māori when answering the telephone and for use in the reception area.

Explanatory notes

1Tikanga is related to the local iwi and/or hapū interpretation and will be developed by way of consultation with local iwi and/or hapū. Evidence of the outcomes in this unit standard must accord with local interpretations.

2Definitions

Manuhiri are visitors either as an individual or as a group.

Manaakitanga, orproviding hospitality, is a fundamental practice which has a range of applications. An associated aspect is the concept of tiaki or caring for others.

Tangata whenua refers to workers or interested parties from within the organisation who have a vested interest in tikanga.

3When dealing with manuhiri, personal presentation (including personal hygiene) will be of a standard that meets the organisation’s requirementsat all times.

4The context of this unit standard is limited to local rohe or takiwā. Where local rohe are also occupied by a number of other iwi and/or hapū, the tangata whenua or mana whenua view will take precedence.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of the receptionist role in terms of tikanga relating to manaaki manuhiri.

Evidence requirements

1.1Tangata whenua are consulted in the establishment of processes for tikanga relating to manaaki manuhiri.

1.2Exercising cultural values and expectations are identified and explainedin accordance with tikanga.

1.3Manuhiri needs are identified and the practice of manaakitanga is implemented in accordance with tikanga and the organisation’s requirements.

Outcome 2

Demonstrate skills in te reo Māori when answering the telephone.

Evidence requirements

2.1Appropriate te reo Māori is used on the telephone when greeting and farewelling callers.

Outcome 3

Demonstrate skills in te reo Māori for use in the reception area.

3.1Appropriate te reo Māori is used in the reception area when greeting and farewelling manuhiri.
