Title / Plan and monitor quality of centrifuging operations for hot dip galvanizing

Purpose / This unit standard is intended for those specialising in centrifuging for hot dip galvanizing.
People credited with this unit standard are able to plan the application of zinc coating to small metal components using the hot dip galvanizing and the centrifuging processes, and monitor quality of completed galvanized and centrifuged components.

Explanatory notes

2 Health and safety procedures must be followed in accordance with workplace and legislative requirements for all tasks leading to assessment against this standard. Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be used throughout operations in accordance with company procedures and manufacturer’s instructions.

3 Definition

Company procedures refer to all documented policies and procedures of the candidate’s employer at the time of training including, but not limited to, those relating to health, safety, environment, quality, and operations.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Plan the application of zinc coating to small metal components using the hot dip galvanizing and the centrifuging processes.

Range components – threaded, non-threaded, hollow section, castings, chain;

Evidence requirements

1.1  Dipping of small components in preparation for centrifuging is planned in accordance with company procedures.

Range planning includes – quantity in basket, immersion time, stirring of articles in zinc.

1.2 Centrifuging is planned for small components in accordance with company procedures.

Range planning includes – transferring of articles, draining baskets, time in centrifuge, quenching, tipping table, transfer to container; and may include rumbling.

Outcome 2

Monitor quality of completed galvanized and centrifuged components.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Centrifuged components have a smooth, uniform, continuous coating and, where relevant, clean threads.

2.2 Consistency of the galvanized components is monitored in accordance with company procedures.

2.3 Where applicable, records of completed galvanized and centrifuged component jobs are kept in accordance with company procedures.
