Purpose / This unit standard is for people for whom English is an additional language. It is intended for learners who have no command or very minimal command of English, but are literate in their own language.
People credited with this unit standard are able to copy letters and numbers (EL Foundation).

Guidance Information

1English Language (EL) refers to the acquisition of English as an additional language.

2This unit standard may contribute to the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Foundation) (Level 1) [Ref: 1879]. It is at a level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference low A1.

3All assessment activities must be conducted in English, which must not be the candidate’s first language. Task instructions may be given in the candidate’s preferred language.

4Assessment must be conducted in a highly supportive environment, where assessors assist the learners to understand the requirements of the task, and reduce affective barriers.

5The assessor must be satisfied that the candidate can independently demonstrate competence against the unit standard.

6It is recommended that:

ithe outcomes are assessed as part of an integrated unit of work, relevant to the learning context of the candidate;

iiassessment be conducted in conjunction with assessment against other English Language unit standards at this level.

7Candidate’s writing competence must be assessed after they have been given the opportunity to edit and proofread their work.

8Definition

Copy, for the purposes of this unit standard, refers to handwriting, not word processing.

Outcomes and Performance criteria

Outcome 1

Copy letters and numbers (EL Foundation).

Rangea total of fifty different symbols, with a minimum of ten symbols for each text;

symbols include – the alphabet, numerical digits 0 to 9.

Performance criteria

1.1 Letters are copied accurately and legibly.

Rangeupper and lower case letters.

1.2Numbers are copied accurately and legibly.

1.3Letter and number formation follows standard conventions.

Rangeplacement and size of symbols.
