Title / Instruct a Core Conditioning with equipment class

Purpose / People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of alignment, core body muscles, health and safety, structure and exercises for a Core Conditioning with equipment class, and instruct a Core Conditioning with equipment class.

Explanatory notes

1Definition

Functional– exercises that have some carry over into everyday life.

2Facility policy and procedure refers to the operations manual or documented normal operating procedures at a fitness facility.

3All activities must be consistent with the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992.

4The candidate must be assessed instructing a class of at least five participants. Core Conditioning equipment must be used. Equipment may include but is not limited to – swiss balls, bosu, dumbbells or free weights, instability discs, tubing, medicine balls, kettle balls, suspension training equipment.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of alignment, core body muscles, health and safety, structure and exercises for a Core Conditioning with equipment class.

Evidence requirements

1.1Describe the importance of alignmentfor core conditioning with equipment in a group fitness class.

Rangeneutral spine, core rotation, core engagement.

1.2Core body muscles, posture, breathing and optimum alignment in terms of Core Conditioning training are demonstrated and described in accordance with the class plan.

Rangemust include but is not limited to – rectus abdominis, obliques - internal and external, transversusabdominus, erector spinae, multifidus, quadratus lumborum.

1.3Health and safety requirements for a Core Conditioning with equipment group fitness class are demonstrated and describedin accordance with facility policy and procedure.

Rangeneutral spine position, joint alignment, pelvic placement;

may include but is not limited to – inflation levels, flooring, appropriate loading.

1.4The structure of a Core Conditioningwith equipment group fitness classis described in accordance with the class plan.

Rangeintegrated exercises, functional exercises.

1.5The exercises in a Core Conditioning with equipment group fitness class are described in accordance with the class plan.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – squat, lunge, push, pull, bend, twist, rotate, floor based core exercises;

one or more piece of equipment.

Outcome 2

Instruct a Core Conditioning with equipment class.

Evidence requirements

2.1Core Conditioning techniquesare safely and effectively demonstrated and instructed in accordance with the class plan.

Rangewarm up, stretching, equipment use.

2.2Participant performance is monitored and modifications to individual performance are communicated in accordance with the class plan.

Rangealignment, stable to unstable, isolated to integrated.

2.3Instruction incorporates techniques to engage the core muscles in accordance with the class plan.

Rangebracing, drawing in, load.
