Demonstrate knowledge of the construction of a thermoforming machine.

Evidence requirements

1.1Thermoforming machine components are identified using enterprise equipment and their purpose is described.

Rangecomponents may include – heating oven, controls, safety features, sheet transport system, sheet clamping system, vacuum thermoforming unit, pressure thermoforming unit, trimming unit, stacking unit, sheet loading system, roll-stock loading system.

1.2Machine services are identified using enterprise equipment and their purpose and controls are described.

Rangemachine services may include – power, water, compressed air, vacuum, hydraulic power pack.

Outcome 2

Start up and shut down a thermoforming machine and ancillary equipment that have been pre-set in accordance with enterprise procedure.

Evidence requirements

2.1Work area is cleared and cleaned to ensure safe operating conditions.

Rangework area may include – floors, stairs, platforms, machine surfaces, ledges, intake and output areas, hand tools.

2.2Sheet or roll stock for thermoforming is verified against job specification, and loaded.

2.3Thermoforming machine and ancillary equipment start-up is performed.

2.4Thermoforming machine and ancillary equipment shut-down is performed.

Outcome 3

Operate a thermoforming process in accordance with enterprise procedure.

Evidence requirements

3.1Process operations are performed, and quality inspection procedures are consistently applied, for complex products.

Rangeprocess operations may include – product removal, product finishing, pre-forming preparation, cleaning between roll changes;

complex products may include – multi-surface products, multi-cavity products, inserted products;

evidence is required for two complex products.

3.2Common product forming faults are identified and reported.

Rangecommon product forming faults include – bubbles, discoloration, poor definition, webbing, surface marks, poor material distribution, tearing, warpage, trim accuracy, trim quality, part size accuracy; evidence is required for four product forming faults.

Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.

Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR). The CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
