Title / Shear sheep under supervision
Level / 2 / Credits / 9
Purpose / This unit standard is for people who are working in an entry level role as shepherds or farm workers.
People credited with this unit standard are able to, under supervision: catch and present sheep for shearing; apply sequence and pattern to shear sheep; and identify wool faults, contaminants, damaged sheep, and injuries to sheep.

1  Evidence requirements must be consistent with workplace procedures and all relevant legislation and subsequent amendments; this includes but is not limited to:

3 Range

A minimum of two sheep are required to be shorn within 20 minutes of continuous shearing.

4 Definition

Workplace procedures refer to written and verbal policies and procedures on safety, operation and production set down by the employer or organisation.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Catch and present sheep for shearing under supervision.

Evidence requirements

1.1  Approach, catch, and present sheep for shearing.

1.2  Control and move sheep to the stand in a manner which enables the consistent application of the shearing pattern.

1.3  Demonstrate safe work practices when handling sheep.

Outcome 2

Apply sequence and pattern to shear sheep.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Apply the handpiece to shear sheep with a minimum of faults.

Range faults – second cuts, skin cuts, ridges, tassels.

2.2 Apply shearing sequence and pattern consistently.

Range footwork, timing, body position.

2.3 Handle sheep during shearing in accordance with the Code of Welfare and Good Practice Guidelines.

2.4 Demonstrate safe work practices when shearing sheep.

Outcome 3

Identify wool faults, contaminants, damaged sheep, and injuries to sheep.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Identify and notify specific wool faults and contaminants.

Range may include but are not limited to – black wool, wire, lambs purses, flystrike;

evidence is required for at least two faults and two contaminants.

3.2 Mark damaged sheep.

Range mastitis, existing injury, disease.

3.3 Identify and notify injuries to sheep that occur during shearing and take remedial action.
