Definition

In the context of this unit standard, livestock refers to either cattle, sheep, or deer.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of methods of breeding livestock.

Evidence requirements

1.1Breeding methods are described in terms of their requirements and procedures.

Rangenatural methods – single sire match, multiple sire mating;

artificial methods – artificial insemination, embryo transfer.

1.2Breeding methods are compared and described in terms of the advantages and disadvantages, and ability to maximise genetic gain.

Rangenatural methods – single sire match, multiple sire mating;

1.3Potential future developments in breeding methods are identified and are consistent with existing industry trends and research.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – cloning.

Evidence requirements

2.1Breeding programmes are described in terms of the requirements and procedures.

Rangebreeding programmes may include but are not limited to – cross, straight, inbreeding, line breeding, outcross;

evidence is required for at least three.

2.2Breeding programmes are compared and explained in terms of advantages and disadvantages, and ability to maximise genetic gain.

evidence is required for at least three.

2.3Potential future developments in breeding programmes are identified and are consistent with existing industry trends and research.
