Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Prepare to operate a hand held post hole borer.

Performance criteria

1.1Post hole borer is checked for suitability for the job, and maintained prior to use in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

Rangethrottle cable and its operation, linkages, kill switch, auger pins.

1.2Auger size is selected to match post size and depth.

1.3Site is checked for obstructions, and obstructions are removed, or work plan adjusted accordingly.

Element 2

Operate a hand held post hole borer.

Performance criteria

2.1Post hole borer is anchored and started in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

2.2Operator is positioned while post hole borer is in operation to ensure work is carried out in a manner which does not cause risk of injury to operator or other people.

2.3Operator maintains full control of post hole borer at all times.

2.4Hole is bored to match post size and required depth, and is in line with guide wires.

2.5Borer is retracted at idle and switched off in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

2.6Post hole borer is transported without risk of damage to equipment and risk of injury to self or other people.

2.7Post hole borer is maintained following use in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
