TEACHING POINTS

The 24 Hour Clock

  • The 24 hour clock system allow for the unambiguous designation of time throughout the standard day.
  • For this reason the military and many other institutions use 24 hour time as a means to prevent time errors.
  • To convert to 24 hour time at 12 hours to the PM hours of the day.
  • In the military times are given as four digits with no colon inserted between the hours and the minutes.

Watch Systems [1]

A watch system, watch schedule or watch bill is a method of assigning regular periods of work duty aboard ships and some other areas of employment. A watch system allows the ship's crew to effectively operate the ship 24hours a day for the duration of long voyages or operations.

Many watch systems incorporate the concept of dogging, whereby one watch is split into two shorter watches so that there is an odd number each day. Doing so allows crew members to have a different watch schedule each day. Often the dog watches are set at dinner time to allow the entire crew to be fed in short order.

CONCLUSION
Summarize the main points and allow time for the completions of the exercises.
HOW SHOULD THE CADETS BE TESTED?
The performance required for promotion to Able Cadet includes the cadet to demonstrate the ability to convert from one type of clock to another. A group activity, such as a friendly competition between members of the class, should assist the confirmation process.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?
The 24 hour time system is used in many occupations outside the military when clear time communication is required..
