Introduction.

Welcome to the 24 Hours of Karting Festival race day. This event poses additional challenges for the organiser and officials, but we are confident if everyone complies with the rules and final instructions this will be a great event. Above all we want competitors to enjoy themselves safely, at the same time making a contribution to the resurfacing of the Vereeniging Kart Circuit.

1. The Event;

The event starts on Saturday 3 September 2016 from 07h00 with the Prokart SSS Sprint series races, followed by the 9th Prokart SSS 12 Hour Endurance race which finishes on Sunday 4 September 2016 at about 09h30. It is going to place unusual stress on officials so the co-operation of competitors is paramount.

Prokart SSS Sprint Series – 4 heats per class

Prokart SSS Endurance Series – 1 x 12 hour endurance race.

The 12 Hour Kart event is run in the dark; therefore special rules are added to enhance the safety of competitors and officials. These rules are in addition to the rules as published and pertain to this event only.

The program has been planned for a slow set up before the race, in order for all teams to undergo scrutinizing, documentation and briefings. A day of this magnitude requires a great amount of preparation and final checks. Please use this time allowed before the event starts, for we will be keeping to the time schedule and plan to start each race at the advertised time according to the program.

2. Notice Board and Race Control

The Notice Board is situated in the western wing of the clubhouse, which will have a timing monitor as well. Results will be posted at hourly intervals.

Race Control and the timekeeping area are out of bounds at all times, except by invitation. The only persons allowed in Race Control area are the Organizer, the Clerk of the Course, the Chairman of the Series, the Chief Scrutineer, the Chief Timekeeper, the appointed Race Directors, Driver representatives and the Commentators.

As per the rules, every competitor must attend drivers briefing. For this event a roll call will be taken prior to drivers briefing, should a competitor not be present at drivers briefing without tendering apologies, a R200-00 fine will be levied and payable before the start.

Any competitor not able to attend drivers briefing, must make prior arrangements with the event COC, within 5 days of the event. At least 60% of any team whose driver, is absent from drivers briefing, having made prior arrangements with the COC, MUST attend drivers briefing. The absent driver MUST report to the COC on arrival to sign in and be briefed. Failure to do so will result in a R200-00 fine.

Competitors entering the pit lane from the circuit between turns 8 and 9 will indicate their intention to do so by raising an arm above helmet height, well before the pit entry, keep well to the left and do not slow down until you have entered the pit lane, so as not to hinder other karts. Penalty for infringing is a “Stop Go”.

10. Qualifying, Grid and Start.

Prokart SSS Sprint Series.

There will be a qualifying session for each class. Please refer to the program for session times per class. All grids will be formed up from fastest to slowest qualifier. All starts will be standing starts. Competitors must be formed up, in the correct order, on the dummy grid at least 5 minutes before the end of the race in progress. All dummy grids in the pre-race paddock must form up to left of the tyre barrier and keep circuit entry clear.

NB. A different driver must be nominated for each qualifying session. The nominated driver’s name for each qualifying session must be lodged with the CoC before commencement of qualifying.

The grid will be formed up in order of fastest to slowest and a Le Mans type standing start will be implemented.

The starting order in the case of this event is actually unimportant. One has many hours in which to apply your skills and tactics.

Start procedure 12 Hour Endurance race. The grid will be a specially marked area, on the main straight on the pit side of the track, just before the start line. Teams will take up their positions, as determined by the qualifying results 10 minutes before the scheduled start.

Karts must be on the grid at the 10 minute to start signal. If not in position by the 5 minute signal to start the warm up lap you may not leave the pit exit and will start from the pit exit, once all karts have left the grid, after the start signal has sounded.

At 20h50, a warm-up lap will be commenced. All karts will return to their original positions in the Le Mans grid format on the pit side of the main straight and cut engines. Drivers will vacate the kart and take up position opposite their kart on the other side of the track. At 20h59 engines will be started by a start assistant who may be employed to hold the kart and prevent it from creeping forward onto the racing line.

At 21h00 at the sound of the siren and dropping of the flag, the driver will run to his/her kart, climb in and leave the grid. The first kart to cross the start line will trigger the time keeping system to start the 12 hour countdown.

Start assistants may not assist the kart by pushing the kart to get it going and must remain in their kart grid position until all karts have passed the start line. Failure to do so will result in a “stop go” penalty being applied

A full explanation and instructions will be given at Drivers Briefing.

11. Special and additional rules for this event.

(The penalties noted hereunder, are for this event only and do not change the Official rules and are not applicable to the Prokart SSS Sprint Series competitors.)

11.1 Red rear facing light and white forward facing light .

This is an important safety requirement for this event for various reasons. Firstly when following and overtaking it is nice to know how far you are away from the kart you are approaching. Secondly in case of power failure, at least you can all follow each other. (More than one flashing light may be fitted.)

A red LED facing rearwards will be part of our technical rules for this event. It must be operational at all time’s day or night. It must be visible from at least 50 meters rearwards, from the driving position of the following kart.

Any team not having a RED LED TO THE REAR at all times will be flagged into the pits to replace, repair or switch on the light.

A minimum of one white forward facing light must be attached to the front of the kart and must be visible from at least 50 meters.

Any team not having a WHITE forward facing light will be flagged into the pits to replace, repair or switch on the light.

These instruments are obtainable from any bicycle shop. They are adept to vibrations and the adversity of shock. It would be advisable to ensure they are mounted securely, in a position that it would not be dislodged by a rear shunt. Please ensure you have a set of spare batteries and or a spare red and white lights. More than one light may be fitted.

Penalty for not displaying a red light to rear, or white forward facing light at any time during the event.

Kart/s will receive the black and orange flag with your number. You will pit immediately to replace or repair the LED light.

11.2. Red flag, and or power failure

In both instances, if the timing system ceases to function. (Should a power failure occur, it should immediately be treated as a RED FLAG situation). It is no use trying to gain a place or race like an idiot. Your last crossing over the start line was your position on track.
