Title / Operate a high frequency welding machine in the industrial textile fabrication industry

Purpose / This unit standard is for people who work in the industrial textile fabrication industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: select material to be welded and set up the high frequency welder; and weld fabric pieces together.

Explanatory notes

2Definition

Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and procedures, work instructions, manufacturer specifications, product quality specifications, and legislative requirements.

Outcome 1

Select material to be welded and set up the high frequency welder.

Rangeeither mobile or bench mounted.

Evidence requirements

1.1Material is selected in accordance with customer and/or company requirements.

1.2Electrodes and welding aids are selected to suit the job in accordance with manufacturer specifications and company requirements.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – bars, nozzles, fabric guides, barrier material, welding dies.

1.3Welder is set up to suit material and job specifications in accordance with company requirements.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – pressure, power, welding time, cooling time, width of weld, number and type of weld.

1.4Energy transmission straps are inspected for safety and suitability in accordance with company requirements.

Rangematerial, size, correctly attached.

1.5Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.

Rangepersonal safety; safety of other people; workshop safety; tool, equipment, and machine safety.

Outcome 2

Weld fabric pieces together.

Evidence requirements

2.1Material to be welded is prepared and pieces produced in accordance with company requirements.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – correct cutting process, clean, dust free, dry, free of oil and grease, salts and conductive particles.

2.2Sample of job material is welded and adjustments made until a weld is proved in warp and weft directions in accordance with company requirements.

2.3Job pieces are welded in the required position and checked in accordance with company requirements.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – correct position, flat, wrinkle free, correct adhesion, free of marks and burns.

2.4On completion of job, welding machine is cleaned and stored in accordance with company requirements.

2.5Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.
