Explanatory notes

1All workplace practices must meet any applicable and recognised codes of practice, and documented workplace health, safety, and environmental procedures for personal, product, workplace health, safety and environmental matters, and the obligations required under current law including the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991, and their subsequent amendments.

2Workplace practices refer to the documented procedures for the machine and/or workplace.

Outcome 1

Use trade terms, vocabulary, instruction marks and abbreviations applicable to carton converting.

Evidence requirements

1.1Trade terms and vocabulary common to carton converting are listed and defined.

2.2Machine systems used in the carton converting area of the workplace are described, and the uses and advantages of each system explained.

2.3Requirements of other departments and processes affected by the production being undertaken are described.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – cut and crease, carton forme making, finishing.

Outcome 3

Demonstrate mathematical skills applicable to carton converting production.

Evidence requirements

3.1Problems are solved using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

3.2Scales are read and calculations made to ensure job requirements are met.

3.3Calculations used meet requirements of the processes and operations being undertaken.

Outcome 4

Demonstrate knowledge of the machinery and equipment used in carton converting production.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – printer, folders, gluer, slotter, creaser, transfer section, window patcher, folder/gluer, glue gun, glue station, plough, rails.

4.1Machinery and equipment used in the workplace for carton converting production are identified.

4.2Machinery and equipment used in the workplace for carton converting production are described in terms of their functions.

Outcome 5

Demonstrate knowledge of the importance of maintaining workflow throughout production.

Evidence requirements

5.1Importance of flow of work from the time a job is raised through production and distribution is described.

5.2A selected job is explained in terms of its workflow from start to finish.

Demonstrate knowledge of the storage and/or warehousing systems in use in the workplace.

6.1Storage and/or warehousing systems located in the workplace are described.

handling systems may include but are not limited to the use of – racks, pallet jacks, buckets, trolleys, pallet containers, conveyors, forklifts, fork-hoists.

6.2Functions and services of storage and/or warehousing systems in the range of evidence requirement 6.1 are described.

Rangefunctions may include – receive, store and move stock, monitor stock, issue stock, dispose of obsolescent stock, despatch stock;

services may include – stock enquiries, stock level maintenance, cataloguing, data entry, scanning.

6.3Systems used in the workplace for recording stock movement are outlined.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – electronic, paper, storage areas, movement procedures, documentation requirements.

6.4Material handling equipment is identified in terms of the types of goods it may be used for.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – conveyors, forklifts, fork-hoists, trolleys.

Demonstrate knowledge of paper, board, and product consumables used in carton converting.

7.1Processes used to manufacture substrates used in carton converting are described.

7.2Substrates used in carton converting are identified in terms of their characteristics.

7.3Effects of relative humidity problems likely to be encountered in the workplace are outlined and ways of overcoming these are explained.

7.4Product consumables used in the workplace are described in terms of their uses and characteristics.

Follow written instructions and complete forms.

8.1Job instruction sheets and associated written instructions are followed to meet workplace practices.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – time sheets, order forms, requisition forms.

Use reference material to ensure procedures are followed and required standards are met.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – trade publications, instruction manuals, maintenance manuals, spare parts manuals, videos, DVDs, product specification information, customer specification information.

9.1Reference material applicable to the process and workplace is located.

9.2Reference material is used to ensure machine operation and product use meet workplace requirements.

Demonstrate knowledge of the factors contributing to production costs.
