Describe and perform catch assessment calculations for a netted catch on a commercial seafood vessel

PurposePeople credited with this unit standard are able to describe and perform the calculation for, on a commercial seafood vessel, an estimate of the: volume of catch within a trawl net; volume of catch within holding bins; density of fish in a catch from a sample; catch composition in terms of volume percentage of each species within a representative sample of a catch; and the greenweight of each species within a catch.

Special notes

1Holding bin means any container, receptacle or pound where fish may be held, and whose volume may be calculated.

2It is not expected that candidates will know all formulae required, and the assessor is required to have them available.

Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Describe and perform the calculation for the estimated volume of catch within a trawl net on a commercial seafood vessel.

Performance criteria

1.1Description and calculation are consistent with the diameter of the fish filled section of the net.

Rangefrom the net plan, from measurements.

1.2Description and calculation are consistent with the becket count and becket height in the fish filled section of the net.

1.3Description and calculation are consistent with the shape of the fish filled section of the net, and formulae for the calculation of the volumes of spheres, truncated cones and cylinders.

1.4Description and calculation produces estimate of catch in the water, and catch on deck.

Element 2

Describe and perform the calculation for the estimated volume of catch within holding bins on a commercial seafood vessel.

Performance criteria

2.1Description and calculation are consistent with the cross sectional area of the holding bins.

2.2Description and calculation are consistent with the height of the fish in the holding bins.

2.3Description and calculation are consistent with the shape of the holding bins, and formulae for the calculation of the volumes of cuboids and trapezoids.

Element 3

Describe and perform the calculation for the estimated density of fish in a catch from a sample on a commercial seafood vessel.

Performance criteria

3.1Description and calculation are consistent with the measured volume and mass of a random sample.

3.2Description and calculation are consistent with formulae for the calculation of density.

Element 4

Describe and perform the calculation for the estimated catch composition in terms of volume percentage of each species within a representative sample of a catch on a commercial seafood vessel.

Rangea minimum of five species present in the catch.

Performance criteria

4.1Description and calculation are consistent with the number of fish of each species identified within the sample.

4.2Description and calculation are consistent with the size factor of each species identified within the sample.

4.3Description and calculation are consistent with formulae for the calculation of volume percentages from species numbers and size factors.

Element 5

Describe and perform the calculation for the estimated greenweight of each species within a catch on a commercial seafood vessel.

Performance criteria

5.1Description and calculation are consistent with the estimated catch weight.

5.2Description and calculation are consistent with the estimated catch composition.

5.3Description and calculation produce an estimated greenweight for each species identified within the catch.

Please note

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.

Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
