Explanatory notes

1Definition

Organisational requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo and/or manual format and are available in the workplace. These include but are not limited to site-specific and company standard operating procedures (SOP), occupational health and safety, food safety and quality management requirements.

2Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to – Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and Animal Products (Dairy) Regulations 2005.

Outcome 1

Prepare to enter a freezer storage environment in a dairy processing operation.

Evidence requirements

1.1Clothing, gloves, hats and footwear is selected to meet organisational requirements.

1.2Clothing, gloves, hats and footwear are correctly fitted prior to entering a freezer according to organisational requirements.

1.3Checks and inspections of protective wear are conducted according to organisational requirements.

1.4Correct points of entry and exit are identified and used in accordance with organisational requirements.

1.5All doors and screens are kept secure in accordance with organisational requirements.

1.6Personal hygiene and product safety procedures are followed according to organisational requirements.

Outcome 2

Monitor equipment operation in a freezer storage environment in a dairy processing operation.

Evidence requirements

2.1The effect freezing temperatures have on equipment is identified.

2.2Equipment is monitored to ensure it is in operational order when used in a freezer, according to organisational requirements.

2.3Freezer temperatures are monitored according to organisational requirements.

Handle frozen product safely for a dairy processing operation.

Evidence requirements

3.1Handling requirements for frozen product are identified according to organisational requirements.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – temperatures, documentation, product rotation, packing arrangements.

3.2Frozen product is handled safely according to organisational requirements.

Outcome 4

Respond to freezer storage area exposure and gas leaks in a dairy processing operation.

Evidence requirements

4.1Signs and symptoms of exposure are identified.

4.2Action is taken to minimise effects of exposure of self and others, according to organisational requirements.

4.3Emergency procedures for gas leaks are identified in accordance with organisational requirements.
