Purpose / This unit standard is for people working in the glass processing industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare to cut glass to irregular shapes; mark glass for cutting irregular shapes manually; and cut glass to irregular shapes manually.

Explanatory notes

1Definitions

Worksite requirements–refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and procedures, work instructions, manufacturer’s specifications, product quality specifications, legislative requirements.

Irregular shapes – shapes other than squares, rectangles and circles.

2All work to be done in accordance with the requirements of the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 and Resource Management Act 1991.

3For the purposes of assessment of this unit standard at least five special glasses from the following list are to be cut – laminated glass, reflective and Low Emissivity coated (Low-E), wired, patterned, glass to be printed, Insulating Glass Units, glass to be laminated, special fire rated products, ceramic products, decorative glasses. Evidence is required for glass from 2mm – 19mm.

Outcome 1

Prepare to cut glass to irregular shapes manually.

Evidence requirements

1.1Preparation of work area and personal safety precautions are carried out in accordance with worksite requirements.

Rangepreparation includes but is not limited to – selection and use of protective clothing and safety equipment, identification of hazards; may include but is not limited to – ventilation of production area,clearing work area, ensuring cleanliness of work area.

1.2Cutting area is checked to ensure it is clear of debris and abrasive material before work commences in accordance with worksite requirements.

1.3Cutting table is selected to meet the special requirements of the glass.

1.4Selected glass meets job specification requirements for type, thickness, and size.

1.5Selected glass is checked for imperfection before cutting in accordance with worksite requirements.

1.6Tools and equipment selected reflect the requirements of the glass and enable the work to be completed without damage to the glass or to the tools and equipment in accordance with worksite requirements.

1.7Placement of glass on the cutting table is done safely using a method appropriate for the type and size of glass in accordance with worksite requirements.

Outcome 2

Mark glass for cutting irregular shapes manually.

Evidence requirements

2.1Job documentation is checked to confirm requirements for cut glass shape.

Rangejob documentation includes but is not limited to – job specifications and/or work order and/or customer order.

2.2Selection and/or construction of template allows for tolerances which meet the manufacturer’s specifications for the glass type, and enables the cut glass to meet job specifications.

2.3Glass is cleaned prior to measurement and marked in accordance with worksite requirements.

2.4All marked and set-up dimensions are checked for accuracy before glass is cut, including allowances made for processing tolerances, in accordance with worksite requirements.

Outcome 3

Cut glass to irregular shapes manually.

Evidence requirements

3.1Glass is cut using provided cutting plan in accordance with worksite requirements.

3.2Cutting and breaking out procedures used result in no breakout feathers and are appropriate for the type and thickness of material and irregular shape being cut.

Rangeprocedures may include but are not limited to – cutting freehand, cutting with a guide, snapping, breaking, wedging, nibbling, tapping out.

3.3Finished glass is checked to ensure it matches template and meets job specifications and worksite requirements.

3.4Finished glass is cleaned, labelled, and prepared for dispatch or further processing in accordance with worksite requirements.

3.5Useable off-cuts are stored in accordance with worksite requirements.

3.6Scrap glass is disposed of and work area is left clean and free from cutting debris in accordance with worksite requirements.

3.7Templates are stored or dispatched in accordance with worksite requirements.
