Purpose / People credited with this unit standard are able to:
-examine and explain the provisions of the Treaty of Waitangi in relation to the selected environmental issues;
-describe Māori environmental resource rights in relation to the selected environmental issues;
-describe the impactof the selected environmental issues on Māori and the environment, and identify possible solutions; and
-prepare and present findingsof the selected environmental issues and their impact on Māori and the environment.

Explanatory notes
1Assessment of this unit standard requires research and presentation of at least two regional or local environmental issues which may include sand mining (Northland and west coast North Island), extraction of pounamu (South Island), water extraction (Milford Sounds, Wairarapa), gravel extraction (river localities), geothermal (Bay of Plenty, volcanic plateau), mining for minerals (Coromandel, Waikato, South Island), fracking (Taranaki, Bay of Plenty, Hawkes Bay),coastal erosion, coastal subdivisiondevelopment, farming, forestry, aquaculture, agriculture.
2Where the local rohe is occupied by a number of iwi or hapū, the tangata whenua or mana whenua view will take precedence.Other iwi or hapū views should be encouraged in order to enrich and enhance understanding of key Māori concepts and practices.
3Descriptions and explanations can be presented in a number of ways that may include oral presentations, visual presentations, written presentations, whakaari, haka, whaikōrero and waiata.
4This is a project-orientated unit standard where learners are expected to undertake primary research to substantiate and fulfil evidence requirements.
5The learner is expected to present the research findings to the whānau, hapū, and/or iwi concerned.
6Definitions
Tangata whenua– the hapū or iwi that holds mana whenua over a particular area.
Mana whenua –recognised authority, customary practices and management of the land and its people.
Māori environmental resource rights– refers to environmental practices of the whānau, hapū, and iwi.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Examine and explainthe provisions of the Treaty of Waitangi in relation to the selected environmental issues.
Evidence requirements
1.1The selected environmental issues are examined and explained in terms of the implications of the Māori version of the Treaty of Waitangi.
1.2The selected environmental issues are examined and explained in terms of the implications of the English version of the Treaty of Waitangi.
Outcome 2
DescribeMāori environmental resource rights in relation to the selected environmental issues.
Evidence requirements
2.1Current legislation relating to the selected environmental issues is/are described in terms of Māori environmental resource rights.
2.2Tangata whenua position on the selected environmental issueis described in terms of the control and ownership of the resourcesspecified in the selected environmental issue.
Outcome 3
Describe the impact of the selected environmental issues on Māori and the environment, and identify possible solutions.
Evidence requirements
3.1The impact of the selected issues is described in relation to the spiritual and cultural impacts on Māori.
3.2The impact of the selected issues is described in relation to the environment.
3.3Relevant stakeholder perspectives on the selected environment issues are identified in relation to the impacts on Māori and the environment.
Rangestakeholders may include - land owners, regional councils, district councils, developers, contractors, neighbours, and recreational users;
evidence of three required.
3.4Possible solutionsto mitigate negative impacts of the environmental issues are identified in terms of cultural appropriateness to Māori, achievability and sustainability.
Outcome 4
Prepare and present findings of the selected environmental issues and their impact on Māori and the environment.
Evidence requirements
4.1The reasoning provided for the impact of the selected environmental issues is substantiated by factual information.
4.2The research findings presented to the whānau, hapū, iwi addressesmatters relating to the impact of the selected environmental issues.
4.3Presentation is clear and concise.
4.4Presentation is culturally appropriate and observant of tikanga Māori.
4.5Findings are presented orally.
