THE GRAY VERSATILITY TROPHY

This trophy was donated in 2003 by Jan Gray for the dog who has exhibited the most versatility over its lifetime. A conformation Championship is not required to earn this trophy. This will be decided based on a point system.

A copy of the AKC show record must be provided with the application for this trophy.

The dog must have earned at least 1 title in at least 3 different venues. The titles may be earned over the lifetime of the dog (time and financial constraints on the part of the owner should not be a factor in determining the versatility of the dog), but at least 1 title must be earned in the awards calendar year. Additional points may be earned for outstanding achievement in a venue but do not count as a title earned in the calendar year (BIS, etc.).

Maximum points are for the lifetime of the dog, not yearly. Points will be awarded for the highest title earned in each venue (a UD will be 15 points, CD and CDX points are not added to the UD points). In Conformation and Obedience, additional points are available for outstanding achievement. These are currently the only venues where this is possible. If it becomes possible in the future, points may be added for outstanding achievement in other venues. Outstanding achievement points cannot exceed the highest maximum points (20 total in both Conformation and Obedience) and can not exceed the maximum points at the highest level earned. The 2 highest placements will be used to determine the additional points (if a dog has 3 Group 1s and 4 Group 2s, it will get 10 points, not 18--if a dog has 1 Group 1 and 4 Group 2s, it would get 9 points since if it got 5 points for the Group 1 and 8 points for Group 2s it would have 13 points which would exceed the 10 point maximum for a Group 1). Only the highest level earned at a single show will get points (BIS gets 10 points, not 10 for BIS + 5 for Group 1 + 1 for BOB).

In the case of a tie in points, the trophy will be awarded to the dog with titles in the greatest number of venues, with more weight being given to those venues in which all dogs can compete (currently conformation, obedience, agility, rally, and tracking). If there is still a tie, the trophy will be awarded to the dog earning the greatest number of titles in the award calendar year. Agility Standard and Preferred classes will be awarded equal points but if a tie occurs most weight will be given to the dog in the Standard classes. If there should still be a tie, the trophy will be awarded to the dog who, in the opinion of the Awards Committee, has displayed the most outstanding show record. Additional HITs, HCs, BISs, Group placements, etc., will all be considered in this decision, so please include all AKC achievements.

The trophy may not be won by the same dog in 2 consecutive years.

PLEASE PRINT! Please submit an AKC show record with this application.

AGILITY: 125 points maximum

At each level, maximum points are awarded for 3 different titles (NA, NAJ, NFP). It titles are duplicates of the same title (standard and preferred), the duplicate will receive only 2 points. So a dog with an NAP and NJP will receive 10 points, NA and NJP is 10 points, but NA and NAP is 7 points. If a dog has a PACH and PAX, only points for the PACH will be awarded unless the AKC adds an equivalent title of the PAX for standard classes.

ALL AKC titles will earn points as those venues restricted to certain breeds show that the dog is capable of performing the tasks it was bred to do (currently earthdog, lure coursing, herding, and hunting). All require training and dedication and should be awarded and recognized. Titles earned for venues not listed here (field trials, coon hunting, etc.) will be issued by the Awards Committee if a dog earns them. Additional venues will be added if/when they become AKC events.

Points from the venues listed below will be counted when compared to other dogs that also have additional venues (other than the ones open to all breeds) available to them, regardless of whether both dogs have earned points in those venues. However, if 2 dogs are being compared, and 1 dog does not have additional venues available, points from the venues below will not be considered. So if a retriever and a herding breed are being compared, both have additional venues available and points will count, even if 1 of the dogs does not have titles in any of the venues. But if a herding breed is compared to a toy breed, and the toy breed does not have additional venues available, the points will not count. This is the only way to make the award available for all breeds.
